I felt like upgrading/ adding some detail to an old Bluebox F7 in Amtrak paint. I have cut out the molded radiator grills (lots of work) and the upper fans (also a lot of work). Lastly I got the Walthers grab kit for athearn loco's. Here is where I am to date the cannon and company fans are absolutely stunning, i Almost hate to paint them, but i think they will transform the model. Any idea for replacement side screens?

Looking good. The grab irons make a big difference. AMB makes a flush window set that has the correct shape for the front windshields as well. laserkit.com/windowho2.htmFor the side screens, you can check e-bay for the Highliners screen sets for their shells. Not sure what else would work.

There are inserts to make the windshields have the correct profile, and glazing to match. I believe American Model Builders is the producer.

Detail Associates used to offer them for F units. Otherwise check with Plano, if nothing else you could shorten his E8 grills.

I have cut out the molded radiator grills (lots of work) and the upper fans (also a lot of work). What were some of your techniques to remove the grills and fans, Drew? I noticed that old plastic shells like these can become very brittle with age. Your cutouts are looking very good, though! Jonas

I cut out the side grills once on a BB f7a using a dermal and then files to get it square, one thing I noticed the shell flexed a lot at that point with the missing plastic, even with the steel grills glued on.

Drew~
Looks like you're off to a good start. If you don't plan on changing the stock exhaust stacks, you might consider drilling out and painting the inside of them soot/greasy black to add some depth. I did it on my CF7 build and on a RTR CSX AC44 magnum, it would look great sitting between those beautiful fans.

Drilling out the stacks is a good idea. I didnt do that on mine but it would be an improvement.
I installed close coupling kits and diaphram kits on my F7 A and B set but I cant for the life of me remember who made them. Made the gap between he units look great, and it looks good even when they arent coupled to another F unit. Are you lighting the headlights and number boards (something I didnt do on mine)?
How about some progress pics?
