Going to strip the 3 cars first then paint with alclad paint. First question I have is what base coat do I use, I see hear in the forum some use gloss black or gray which is better and what alclad paint do I use chrome or aluminium? Right now the 3 cars are painted blue and gold, which did not turn out as good as I was hoping. Will post some pictures of what they look like soon as I can.
Any input whould be nice.

I've used the alclad chrome and aluminum colors the base color determines the final finish (sheen) when i use black i get a mid shine when i use the gray i get a more polished shine.
Just depends on the look you want remember some color variety makes for a better train
And spray in real light coats

One bad thing on my vista dome car is the dome seats are not a separate part, so cant paint the seats or tint the glass, will have to mask all of them before I paint it[/quote]
That's going to be a real pain on the dome car

Going to use these and some others yet to buy for the rock island Kansas city rocket. Problem i am having is have little info on that. Have the names of the cars and what kind of car they where, but not many pictures of what they looked like other then the Minnesota. I know two sets of the coaches where articulated, but going to model them a single units. I found one small picture of the Kansas city rocket in one of my rock island books, could only tell that it was a E-unit but not which kind. The rock island historical society web site has not been updated sense 2013, there museum here in Illinois has been closed the last two times i have stopped by and looks empty. The remember the rock wed site by andover junction does not appear to have a forum or some thing similar. One good thing now that i have stripped the paint off the vista doom car was able to pop loose the upper window. spent 20 minutes masking and taping the windows on it.

Went to use my air brush to paint them today, and it would not turn on, go figure. Thinking of getting a new one at hobby lobby as i can use the 40% coupon in store or on line. What one at that site is a good one to get?

What one at that site is a good one to get? Odd...the compressor wouldn't turn on or the airbrush wouldn't work? If it's the brush itself maybe disassemble it and soak in acetone to clean it thoroughly. If it's the compressor...good luck! I had the same coupon a while ago and bought their cheapest one...it has been working great for over three years now. It's a Badger 155-1 Anthem.

kinda a update, fixed the broken wire on the on off switch, bought some krylon gloss light grey paint for a basecoat sprayed it on one model, after drying it was very ruff finish. So this weekend will be stripping it again. I should have used my airbrush, but no I thought the spray can would work.

You might have been holding the can too far away, so the paint was partially drying before hitting the model. You can get good results with spray cans of the technique is correct.

Tested on a piece of scrap plastic, first pass was close in and was rough, second and fourth was better, third was rough also. guessing the can is bad or something. Will post picture this weekend.
