Braedan, you have made chicken salad out of chicken sh^t with this model. You have made that Bmann look better than the more premium RTR Athearn behind it! Take a bow! I could not have said it better!! That looks GREAT. The tank really impressed me! I may attempt that on mine. I was considering a 2600 or 3000 gal tank... Can I get the part number for the tank detail kit please?? Yes, take a bow! ~ Carmine *bows* WOW!! Thank you so much guys! I honestly don't know what to say, but I'm truly honoured! pacbelt, the kit with the filler necks and gauges is #FU-3102 (Walthers part no. 229-3102). I also got the DA flush mount gauges, which is #FU-3101 (Walthers no. 229-3101). If your interested in the Details West fuel tank brackets, their part number is #FB-197 (Walthers no. 235-197).

Nice Job. Wonder if the Bachmann SD40-2 can be made to look good. They seem to have the right wheelbase even.
I think you could have gotten away with shortening the mounting pegs and using shorter flathead screws after countersinking them.

Makes me very proud reading your fantastic comments! Packer, I figured relocating the screws would be better so I wouldn't need to worry about screws possibly sticking out and so on. Being hidden inside the tank is best in my opinion. But that's a great idea for sure!

I don't believe the screws are really necessary. I find that the coupler pockets are adequate to hold the shell to the frame. When I remove screws to remove a shell, I usually don't reinstall them.

The Bachmann model unfortunately has the couplers mounted on the shell, not the frame. So screws are almost nessesary

I may go with a 3000 or 3200 gal tank, so I can keep the stock screws, and have some sort of a prototype tank. (An advantage of freelancing!) You came up with a creative solution to the short tank problem. Very impressive!! ~ Carmine

I had this idea for a while, but the fact that the relocating had to be very accurate held me back. Finally decided to break out the drill bits and use my highest attention skills with care.

Well, that's because you have different standards... You are modelling a specific Road. I may have chosen a easier path, with my own Railroad. Although, unless you want NOBODY to respect your work, freelance Roads still need a level of plausibility!! And for my OWN satisfaction. Sure, I can choose my fuel tank, but IMHO, it MUST be prototypical for a GP38!! Sometimes, I feel like YOU guys have it easier. You HAVE standards already done by professionals.... Us freelance guys have to research, and make up our own!! Two sides of the SAME coin, realistically.

Just an update regarding this project…
Still chugging away on 3084. A bunch of details have come in and I'm in the process of getting the shell ready for those details. Just put another detail parts order out to the hobby shop, so I hope to have those in within the next few weeks. I'll maybe get a photo up showing where I'm at. Lots more to do yet.

Here's an update pic showing what is happening so far to the shell. As you can see, we're uncovering it's original colours

Fantastic result on your project, Braedan.
I am attempting something a lot less involved with trying to Canadian-ise a Kato SD40 by changing the headlight and bell.
Can I ask what brand of detail part your hood mounted bell and nose headlight are, assuming you purchased these.
Specific info such as this is difficult to come by in Australia.
Cheers, Poida.

Hey Braedan, looking good! Have you entertained installing the MBE steps? Looks like you're going all the way...don't stop now!

Thanks poida01!! The bell is by Juneco Scale Models and the headlight is by Miniatures by Eric. I purchased them in-store in Calgary, AB, but can be bought online Good luck with the SD40! I'm working on an Athearn RTR CP SD40. Helpful note, the single beam headlight for the rear is also made by Miniatures by Eric (if your doing CP specifically)

Hey Braedan, looking good! Have you entertained installing the MBE steps? Looks like you're going all the way...don't stop now! Thanks Sean! I do have steps on the way, however not MBE. I'm going to give the Custom Finishing versions a try, since they were available on Walthers' website while I was making another parts order. We'll see how things go!

Hmmm, hope you didn't order the #276 steps. They are way too short, they say they're for GP38 but in actuality they will only fit SWs.
Use the #277 steps, they will work. I used them on a few SDs.

Oh crap then… they were the only three-up steps available. Guess I got fooled lol. Okay, well thanks on the info! I'll see if I can get some MBEs ordered sooner than later
