Started with ATSF #1 in the bulldog-nose design. Basing on the body of an Aristo-Craft heavyweight car the rear get the slightly inclined ending using the original HW end. The front was built up with some formers , styrene overlays and glass fiber layers. Final shaping was done using epoxy putty. For the photos I used passenger HW-trucks as a stand-in. Once again a start that would turn Dr. Frankenstein jealous Regards Norman

Couldn't leave well enough alone, could you? I remember liking the look of this as a wee tyke when I saw a pic of it in one of those giant library-issue coffee table books. Too young to appreciate what it was then, but it could sure wear the warbonnet well.
More, please.

Project's update Now with the pilot, a roughly finished front end of the roof and the side skirt trimmed it doesn't look too badly any longer (it's still riding on the HW trucks). Looking on the photos I notice that the ramp to the front air-intake has to be extended backwards and the front area with the windows as well as the air-intake should be reduced in height Regards Norman

WOW! Very impressive. What did you use to shape the nose? Ive wanted to do a Milwaukee Bulldog motor car and it has a somewhat similar shape to the nose.

Hi Mike, thanks for the compliment. I used styrene horizontal formers and one vertical former at the nose's tip as a base. Then I applied thin styrene layers onto the formers. However, this will give only a rough base of the intended shape. Finally I put applied resin (thickness app. 1/8 to 1/4", depending on the position) to get a smooth shape. Anyway, I'm not commpletely satiesfied for the current status - the lower part should be a bit more vertical, the upper part a bit more tilited towards the front windows...this would also influence the shape of the pilot which then should be less inclined than now. It is hard to get the correct shape from the old photos - the available diagrams are not completely satisfying neither becuase there are some obvious differences to the photos (window size, pilot shape etc.). However, if I look onto MILW's bulldog nosed motor cars their nose resembles more the Alco FA's shape than that of an EMD F-unit. The front is vertical and almost flat rather than bowed continously as on EMD's noses. I'd start with a shortened FA-nose front shell - even the shape of the surfaces around the front windows could be re-used by making a slightly steeper angle between the nose and that area. The front pilot should match as well. Hope this helps a bit.
Kind regards Norman

Man that model is a masterful kitbash, thing of beauty, although the prototype is quite hideous. Can't wait to see the red and silver on it!

Norman What are you going to use to finish the yellow/black stripes that compliment the Warbonnet scheme? There's a good picture of Amos & Andy in "Warbonnets - From Super Chief to Super Fleet" by Dan Pope & Mark Lynn. It shows the three axle truck & Warbonnet scheme version on page 20. The Amos & Andy nose herald looks slightly different than those on other EMD E & F units. But then there's not too many pix of Amos & Andy for nit pickers to compare against your model. >)

Hello Andy, I have some pictures of the bulldog-nosed unit (McCall's 'Early Desel Daze', Brasher's 'One spot twins' etc.). I noticed some differences in the front herald obviously having a reduced width. I plan to buy an 0-scale decal set of early SF E-units, scanning it and modifying it to the correct shape on the computer.
Regards Norman
