I recently purchased a Digitrax PR-3 to use as a stand-alone programmer on an isolated programming track (I do not have a full DCC system yet because the layout is in the very early stages of construction). I have JMRI installed on an XP computer as the interface.
The problem I'm having is after figuring out how to initially configure the PR-3 (documentation is pretty poor), I cannot seem to get it to detect a decoder equipped locomotive on the programming track. I am using a 12-volt external power source. Granted it's not the one that Digitrax sells, but any 12v center positive power supply should be adequate from what I have read, and I shouldn't need more than that as I will not be using the PR-3 for sound projects.
Any pointers, Diesel Detailers? Thanks in advance!

12 volt might not be enough as Digitrax calls for 14 Volts. I use a printer supply box, had laying around. Try this install www.digitrax.com/downloads/ find DigiIPL (version 1.09) load it onto your computer. start it and follow the directions. This tool will tell you if you got the Comm ports right. Usually I miss the step about installing the correct drivers. Go to device manager and open Ports (COM & LPT) if you do not see a comm port usually (COMM 3) open the properties and look at who the manufacturer (should be Digitrax Inc.) If no luck then you unplug the USB cable. Hold the buttons on the PR3 down while plugging in the USB. Open DigiIPL 109 and see if you have the Comm port connected. A lot of stuff to get it right but well worth it when done. My opinion these directions were meant for rocket scientists! Good Luck RJ

Thanks, rjm! I'm a couple days late on the update, but I did get a 14 volt power supply and that got the PR-3 working right away. I've since been dabbling in JMRI and successfully programmed loco addresses and even remapped the functions controlling the lights on one loco. Still have a lot of learning JMRI to do now, but I am up and running.
re: your rocket science comment, all I can say is "roger that!" ;-)
