I honestly think that Athearn just shrunk theirs down to fit the box.

Well boo....No RDCs from Rapido, for now... Decals came in today from Highball, yes I'm uber lazy and would rather have those tiny RDC numberboards printed rather than piece together the numbers... Still dislike those huge end windows...oh well...Maybe I'll change them...

Looks good to me but now you're making me second guess the large windows on mine.
Does Jim sell those VIA decals you've got?

I've only been able to find one pic of a VIA RDC with the large windows intact, and its coupled to a CP hockeymask RDC which would suggest it's 1977-78ish date. There are lots of CN orange RDCs with large windows, and one or two with the large numberboards... www.rr-fallenflags.org/cn/cn-r6111jpa.jpg

Hmmmm, something's missing..... In reality, matching the RDC9 underside is quite a bit more work than just lopping off the engine box. The batteries were divided up and moved to opposite sides to help balance out the weight. There's also the sander doors still present, to wheels that no longer give traction. I might have one complete floor cast up in resin to lopp off the parts to make the extra stuff needed to finish it off. (and a pile of properly sized parts to go on a potential Athearn RDC4 kitbash) M'eh...its a 75%er...

Funny you mention that, as I was thinking about that late last night when I read that blog post. If there is a Railiner announced at Springfield, I will be sure to let you know

I'm trying to think of what the "6 variations" would be if it were?
RDC1 early and later vers. RDC2 early and later vers. RDC3 early and later vers. (did CN or CP own the early version?) RDC4 early and later vers. RDC9 ex BM late vers. RDC? M-497??
Better get down stairs and finish my 3!!!

Come the VIA era, most were rebuilt into RDC-1 and RDC-2's. Hmm, maybe there's an S6/S12/S13/RS23 in the works...or they're gonna scoop TLT with an RS10/RS18/RS18u...or an SW8/9/900/1200 + SW900RS/SW1200RS(!). Or some Metra/GO/AMT/AMTK/NJT F40's...hmmm.

Or, or, or, maybe 1 American locomotive and 1 British locomotive. The bar has been set!

Scoop away, TLT likes to flap gums about their no-show releases... MrDan can't spill the beans...

It was mentioned in the newsletter that end fluting variations will be done, making PGE/BC Rail modelers happy. A roadnumber/phase sheet will probably be up on the Rapido website soon, most of the numbers and roads (at least the Canadian ones) have been finalized (a few were switched around to ensure accuracy and best possible number choices).

I spoke with Dan for quite a while at Springfield on Saturday. I'm sure they are going to be nice models, but I expressed reservations about the drives. It turns out that they are using two N scale motors (one for each truck) which will be buried in the floor to allow for a fully decorated interior. Although I like the idea, I am worried about the N scale motors getting out of tune with each other, sort of like the old Bachmann 70 tonner drives but with a better motor. In terms of power, that shouldn't be an issue as they aren't pulling much weight around.
Hopefully they will sell the sound decoders, as I would like to get a pair of sound decoders to upgrade my Proto railliners, which I am quite happy with at the moment.
I'll be following this one closely as it will be neat to see what they come up with. Having modeled some of the VIA/CN ones myself, choosing road numbers where the detailing is consistent is going to be a challenge as there were almost endless variations.
Also, I spoke with Bowser and they have all of the CAD work done for the Canadian M636's and hope to proceed to tooling construction in the next year. They have a lot on the go so I can understand the wait.

Well, just as Jason called it, Ebay is awash with people dumping their Proto RDCs. I'm intrigued though, if you have CP maroon striped ones, or CN green, or CN orange pre 1970, you're further ahead keeping your Protos as they are accurate phase 1s for those eras with the addition of some minor details. (horns, antennae, triangle #boards) Oh well, sell your protos for half what you paid, and give another $200 per to Jason! I might be able to score another RDC9 candidate for under $50...

The record to beat is $20 for one I got last year (well, plus $5 S&H...). And it was a Canadian one . The only problem though is I need to renumber all 3 of my CP Protos due to the Hobbycraft Canada/TLT number curse. I'm going to get a Rapido but keep my few Protos around and save for some other Rapido goodies. I don't really model passenger trains, but a trio of RDCs does look cool cruising down the track (even at 65 smph). Since CP isn't CN/VIA and didn't go all crazy with new headlight housings, diaphragms & pilot plows, a few CP additions would net a decent Phase 1 from the Proto model without heavy bodywork. CP did start equipping their RDC1's with smaller Phase 1 windows in the 70's (like CN and VIA did), so therein lies a partial rub (Rapido will be doing those on the VIA/CN modded units: mlsvc01-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/b02e8bb...40f406.jpg)

Yes and they will definitely be showing up at the train shows. Like most of Rapido's stuff, I find if you wait long enough you can find what you are looking for at a great price. Every manufacturers's products are vulnerable to this as well. I have a bunch of Rapido stuff and I have paid anywhere between 40 to 60% of the original list price, but never more (the FPA-4 will be the first exception) If you time it right when the hobby shops/local show vendors want to get rid of the remaining stock then you're golden.
Case(s) in point there were a bunch of NIB LRC coaches selling for $30 at the Moncton show last spring and if I had a nickel for every Osgood Bradly coach I say listed for $35 at Springfield this past weekend I'd be rich. There were literally tables upon tables of them.
