I needed to fabricate a fan housing cover to hold the screen in place covering the Maelstrom Fans. So I made the measurements and fired up inkscape and created the pattern that I'd decided to use. I wanted the cover to be a bit more sophisticated machining than you would normally find so I curved the short ends of the openings. This is something that could have taken a lot of trouble and time to accomplish, but I used the cricut to scribe the piece so it only took about 5 minutes to make this. Here's the pattern I made in inkscape: Next I made a test cut in yellow card stock and when I had the perfect match (took 2 tries) I scribed the styrene... To remove the piece from the styrene, I used an xacto and carefully scribed lightly until the piece came free and then cleaned it up with a jewelers file, total time from design to finish: 20 minutes. The small defects you can see have been corrected. I'll now add 6 eyebolts and the screen underneath. It will be attached with just a bit of contact cement so it can be taken off if necessary. I'll probably clip 1 corner as a registration point to show that when maintenance is being done there is an actual orientation to this cover.

I rebuilt the motor and the trucks. This is the first time I've ever used spray on graphite as the gear lube. I took it about 10 laps around the test track and it seems to be pretty good stuff. The trucks require some insulation because they can short the motor in tight turns so I wrapped the contact arms with electrical tape. I solved the problem of loose worm gears on these old locomotives by coating the worm with graphite and the using Plio-Bond to glue the 2 parts together. That 2 part worm housing was a pain, gluing the parts together solved a ton of mechanical problems like the linkage coming loose or the idler slipping. Once the lighting is installed this thing will draw a lot of power. There's going to be about 8 LED's, maybe more if I add some purple ground effects. When I get to the DCC part, I'm betting I'll need something that can handle 3 amps just in case...

This project is coming along nicely. I love the huge blower housing on the engineers side so much and the more modern top fans that I think I'm going to go ahead and do 2 more with M cabs on the front and pretty much the same body arrangement.
Right now I have that portion behind the blower housing that needs to be filled, I'm thinking it has to be resin rather than styrene.
The extra wide body leaves no room for the blower walkway. Since this thing is already outrageous I think some grab irons going up on each side of the blower will have to be installed.
Any thoughts?

Soundtraxx recently released a 4 or 5 amp version of their Econami. Excellent sounds and lighting effects.
Love the cab idea, but what about bridge clearances? Just asking.... that is one unusual build...

Update....so I started making the heavy duty cars that the MP40 will pull. I found these pill box containers at the drug store and instantly an extra heavy ore car idea came to life....
I haven't shown you guys the couplers yet. They are truly awesome. I'm going to call them the "Herman Armbar Janney Type E-X"
They will pull your arms off....
If you haven't read the above posts, they are an extra long shank coupler made by McHenry called the MCH52. By gluing a washer to the end of the couplers and using a 2-56 screw to the body, they allow the MP40 to negotiate 22" radius and not derail any cars.
They look funny the first time you see them, but I think if I paint them flourescent green and orange I'll avoid the uncanny valley with this build.
I do a lot of video and photo editing and one of my favorite training videos talks about the uncanny valley and says that if it looks fake and out of place then it hasn't been made radical enough.
Photos coming soon...

I forgot to post the clearance dimensions...
The top of the cab is 17 feet above the rails, so that is slightly less than a double stack conex.

So I'm at a place where I need to do some work with polyurethane. I've been working on the freight cars and sharpening my skills with the resin. Just about ready to go ahead and fill the voids that need structural strength, so there should be some new pix shortly.
The freight cars have turned out unbelievably great so far. I'll post those pix in the section of freight.

Just a little suggestion that may help if you haven't already considered it. You could maybe use the coupler Pockets from the auto racks that Walters makes they seem to have a larger swing and you could stolen close them in the pilot and I believe that they can be mounted separately as well.

Was just wondering? Have you considered maybe making to beat type trucks under your locomotive with ASP and boasted that of the type that is used on the turbines or the athearn u50? I have been considering dabbling into some of this unique and one-off type work if I can find the parts necessary to complete one.

Here's what it looks like in October 2017... There is still quite a bit of finishing to do. A couple things that I changed were the pilots and the stand for the cab. I bought a Mecreator 2 3D printer on amazon for about $300 and made new pilots and the cab stand. I also made a new front end with the letters HERCULES above the air intake. I put 4 air cleaner enclosures from an SD60 and made 1 huge enclosure as you can see above. I really like the 4 axle trucks, much better than the B-B+B-B arrangement of the U50. On my trucks, the inside 2 axles are very free floating so even over the roughest track this thing stays on the rails. Currently it pulls same as using 3 blue box GP9's.
