Don't see any real wood just alot of rusted steel. Maybe you could put some arrows pointing out what you mean. The cross bars look like they could have some wood but more likely just rusted steel. Both of those cars must have VERY strong frames to hold coils in the middle! Has aAnybody seen coil cars w/ coil filling all of the car besides the SP ones.

I placed the arrows pointing to it and outlined the wood in green stripes. I've also got proto pics that show the wood better but I wanted to use one I posted. The wood always seems to be mounted where the coils would contact the car body. Also, although it is usually three or four strips wide, the coils only seem to contact the middle plank(s) as they ride due to their curvature. I have a couple of pics where the wood is completely splintered off and just a pile of wood shards in the bottom. Let me know what you think.

To me it still looks like the steel floor w rust on it. Can't image wood lasting very long with coils being "bounced" off it. LOL Would like to see your other example though.

Yeah, it's difficult to discern. I saw it in person that day and it was a bit more obvious because I walked around and saw more angles of other cars. However, here are a couple of pics I found on the ol'interweb: I think that last pic shows it really well. However, you can also see the wood splintering in the upper pic.

Nick Looks like you're right about coil cars having wood in the troughs. Here's a link to some pix of INLX coil cars: www.rrpicturearchives.net/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=76196Scroll down to 7th image (INLX 20010) & it really looks like the wood in the trough is almost obliterated! Guess it doesn't matter how much the wood is damaged as long as there's enough left to "cushion" the coils. Yet in several others the wood look like painted steel planks Looks like the planks are approx. 1"x6" x 6' in 3 rows on both sides of the trough. Just took a good look at my Red Caboose & Walthers coil cars & both have the planks molded into the floor. Of course they are painted the same as the rest of the cars so you have to look real good to see them. Now how to model the "wood" floors to make them look like the pix. Not all coils are transported w/ hoods so the floors can't always be hidden by them. Have seen whole coil trains w/ not one hood.

Yeah, those INLX cars are ones I found a while ago when searching for interior pics of coil cars. That wood has been brutalized for sure! As far as how to model that, my guess is that you would have to mill off the molded "wood" to make it look like some protos. Of course you can also model them like I did with a thin real wood strip on top of the molded metal "wood" and just splinter it a little to show wear. Good luck and post'em up when you complete them!
