I agree, looks good. What did you use for the chopped low nose? Did you just cut down the stock one or is that an aftermarket part?

Its a Cannon and Co a buddy gave me to try. Ill look into it and see if i can find a part number. With a little modification it works perfect for EJE's 818. I agree, looks good. What did you use for the chopped low nose? Did you just cut down the stock one or is that an aftermarket part?

fogg0311, I do not pretend to know what your overall goal is or was with your model. Did you want to get close enough and use whatever parts you had on hand or dig into a real kitbash and prototype model the J 818. The J being my favorite prototype railroad, I would like to give some constructive criticism. I also commend you for taking on this project. The SD-M is not a simple build. Using the link, I find the following. www.slopes09.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=23694The fans you chose to use are Q fans. The correct fans would be the ones from the Atlas SD24/26. According to the Atlas web site, the parts are in stock and are part #'s 750238 fan,750239 fan base and 750240 fan grill. The section behind the cab is a new electrical cabinet room and is much shorter than what you have modeled. That is why it has a squared off roof section. The battery boxes are not standard SD9. They are of the type used on a standard EMD hood unit except for the front step section. They look to be 40 series battery boxes. I am not trying to discourage you. I want to help you be a better modeler. Your already a better modeler for actually taking the time to "BUILD" a model. We are a dying breed and the more experienced of us need and should help those wanting to actually build models.

I thought those radiator fans looked different than what should be there. I'm pretty sure these SD-M's were originally some of the last SD9's built. That's why they have 2 radiator fans and the later style battery boxes that put the cab up higher. The battery boxes from any Proto GP7,9,18,20 would have worked perfect.

What a cool looking locomotive! I went and looked at pictures of the real one and like this build even more now. Great job. Love the display as well.

That's a good looking model! If you make the mods Brian suggests above, then it'll be proto! But, if you don't you can take it to the club (if you're in one) and I bet maybe 1 guy (if any) will notice the differences. I did notice the step wells aren't the usual angled kind,... did you make those mods?

Hello Guys, Thanks for the tips, I bought a few parts but it was more of just a fun project that I wanted to create while finishing my masters. Ever since I saw some of these SD-M's from the J I just liked the character about them. They area all so different when you start going through proto shots. I am going to make a second unit to run with this, it was difficult to keep exactly to proto specs though. It was a lot to figure out the layout how everything was going to fit under the shell with the Tsunami board and wiring all the leds. As for the fan and battery boxes. I thought they were Q fans, asked a buddy that also kit bashes like myself and said those were the ones to get since the J used all sorts of different parts. I am by no means an expert with all the locomotive parts, I really just enjoy the challenge of the build. I was wondering what battery boxes they used, I just stuck with what came on the original SD-9 but knew they were off and wanted to continue the build before my son was born. Needless to say that I don't have as much time anymore. I do take it out to the Elmhurst MRRC on occasion to get some running time in. Thanks, please keep the comments coming.

Did you ever get that part number for the nose? Also something to keep in mind, these units were not rebuilt by the EJ&E, but rather the DM&IR.
