Hello all;
After finishing up the Ex UP weirdo Fs, its time to go back to a Canuck project. I've had this MDC RS3 and Stewart body kit for some time. I also got Cdn style carbody sides from readytrain.com which are a direct fit to the Stewart body kit.
Anyway, this will be a cobble of kits with MDC chassis, deck and cab, with Stewart carbody and readytrain sides. The MDC cab, oddly enough, doesn't fit the deck, as the real thing hangs a 1/2" over the sides, so I cut it in half and spliced in some styrene.
MBE RS2 winter hatch, with low hood bell grafted onto the long hood. A friend's resin RS18 battery boxes adorn the sides.
Planned activities include beefing up the frame look, adding resin pilots and regular CN details per 3019. Paint scheme will be ca 1968 small noodle.
Work in progress.

Looks great so far!! I have the readytrains sides, but have never seen them installed. What are you planning to do with the frame? and will you have some photos.

I just need to add some frame rails, that's all. The chassis casting is quite rudimentary, although it has the correct fuel tank size/profile.

Hey Sean,
Are those the sides that are pieced together with a cut up Stewart side? You post kind of makes it sound like they are a complete replacement side (which would be cool)

the piece from ready trains is a complete side piece from the cab back to the hood end.

Yeah, thats right. The stewart undec body kits come in 7 pieces, the ends, roof, sides and cab. Simply cut the sides in half, inside where the cab would be and glue the readytrain sides in its place. That's it. www.readytrain.com/pages/decals-parts-list.htmlpart AWS-16

Yeah, I am pretty sure that's the ones I have, I have a half dozen of the Stewart kits to do at some point. I just thought it would have been cool if there was a full side instead of something you had to splice together. On the one I have done I took the time to make all the original tabs for fitment just like the Stewart original. I have a couple of built shells i purchased at shows and know I want my efforts to look more like Sean's than the pieces I picked up.

No, you don't have to splice it together, the cut line is inside the cab. I just removed all sidewall material in the cab anyway. If you use the stewart deck piece, it'll all fit nicely in the deck groove.

Looking really good. I have the Ready Trains sides and have been waiting to use them. Hope you don't mind, going to be using your build as a reference.

Looks good. What did you do to create the frame rails?

Just evergreen 6x6 styrene. Nuthin fancy, it'll all get painted black. I just didn't like the lack of thickness when looking at the model directly at the side and all the daylight coming thru around the trucks from the other side.

No this one was CN purchased. If memory serves me (and please chime in if I'm, wrong) 3019 was part of the second order that came from MLW with the carbody filters. The first order came with Alco style door louvers. (some were modified to filters after the fact) 3018 and 3019 were the only 2 from the 2nd order without dyn brakes which is why I chose 3019. I cannot for the life of me find a roof shot of either these units or CP RS3s showing what the dyn brake grilles look like from above. The CV ones were 3040 and 3041 IIRC. 3900 and 3901 were also oddball US built RS3s, the only ones with a steam gennie. I'd love to do 3900 at some point. Looks great!! will you be adding the chain brakes as well? I got a little surprise up my sleeve for the brake chains and I'll show you at the RPM Jake!

Youre right on the numbers, those two are the only ones from that order that are non-dynamic. Ive gone thru all my shots, and best I can see is on the short hood, looks like a slice taken out across the hood, and a small squared off bulge is showing on each side of the hood, with the grill set just below the roofline, but for the life of me cant find anything overhead showing the actual grill......

Progress! Getting it ready for decals (testing of the colours of the New CN decal set) I love the MM flat black paint! Very chalky!

Update from the dead!!! I got my chakra aligned somehow and was in the frame of mind to start into some serious handrailing....I HATE HANDRAILS! But its a stage that has to be passed. Anyway, 3019 got some stanchions, 6201 got some simple athearn stanchions and steel rail. So did 7202. Now 3639, I don't know what I was thinking in having some etchings made to better represent the end handrails. They are beaucoup fragile! I found those side stanchions, but they were in an unmarked pack. They're not TSPs, or Hobbytowns. They're a bit too tall though, but they look great with a nice cross section.
