Looks good Randy. What did you use to open up the classification lights on the short hood? A 3/32 drill bit.

I am really liking how this has turned out. I am not a highwood man by any means but this is cool. And it sounds like there are many options that is build could have gone also. Things to ponder as Eric would say.
Long nose? Kinda would look like the SD30ECO that CP has for the front end.. Interesting!

Thanks. I gotta get myself motivated and do some more work on this. Seems like all I wanna do is cat/nap these days.

The dash one just meant that it didn't have the dash two electronics that many older rebuilt locomotives would receive. A cheap Geep is all EMD wanted to sell. I think the turbo versions got better systems though. It probably should have a dash one designation or AC. But no big deal on a fantasy unit. Looks awsome Randy.

The G15-1 was EMDs attempt to entice railroads to buy new rather than rebuild old GP7/9/18s, so no dash 2 electronics. It didnt work out well though which is why there are so few of the GP15-1s out there. I think if they sold better EMD might have tried the SD series the same way, so this build isnt too far fetched.

I wouldn't say few but, they certainly didn't sell like the GP7/9s or SD40s or anything like that.

They didn't sell because they cost too much. A GP7-9-18 was required for trade in. At the time, a railroad could rebuilt probably 2 (maybe more) GP9s for what EMD wanted for one GP15. They did have newer-style electrical cabinets. Maybe not Dash-2 cards, but something similar.

Working for a railroad I get to see a lot of these things (GP38s, SD40s)... That thing is BARE compared to a Dash 2.

That is a GP15-1 back wall. Yes, quite barren. Our MP15ACs have more cards in the cabinet than these GP15s have.

This is starting to make the GP15-1, in all reality, sound like a GP7 or GP9 with a new hood?

New frame, body and cab, 645 power plant, etc. Rebuilt trucks. Unsure about generator, might be rebuilt/upgraded. John This is starting to make the GP15-1, in all reality, sound like a GP7 or GP9 with a new hood? Sent from my GT-I9100 using proboards

I think EMD more wanted the trade-in to keep railroads from being able to rebuild it elsewhere. The rebuilt ones were competition, the more they could take back the better. Plus it helped offset costs some by reusing compoments.
The BL20-2 was a similar concept but no one ever placed orders.

Now I see why the GP15-1 wasn't so popular.
You would have thought that if they'd gone to such lengths, as described above, that they would have just installed a Dash-2 electrical cabinet too?

I like this build a lot and I would not say that it is a humble build at all, I think it looks great. I am not much of a High Hood fan but I am a big 6 axle guy and the high hoods always look much better to me that way and this being something completely different really makes it quite cool.
Very well done.

Oooo, or push everything back and put a snoot nose on it. A high hood Snoot! Oh I like that idea of the Snoot Hood. Paulie

I just don't have the drive to model since I had the heart attack and renal failure. Once I get back into the groove this will be my first unit to get my attention.
