Well, it just came in today... The resin HO scale G12 from Hobbytec Modelismo in Brazil. Its been a bit of a chore to acquire. As you can see behind it, this quest started out with the Frateschi G12 which, while a decent attempt at a G12 is actually OO scale 1/72 that runs on HO track. It was disappointing because as you can see, CN's diminutive 992 is dwarfed by the GP9s. The Frateschi matches the size of a GP9. So, yes it is a CN prototype, 1 of 2 acquired from the London & Port Stanley Ry in 1966. CN shipped them off to the west coast soon after repainting where they spent the remainder of their careers. There were similar G8s used in the prairies and narrow guage versions from NFLD. NW2 as comparison This should be a fairly easy build, some brass square stock to make a frame, SW trucks with supplied sideframes and some CNesque details... stay tuned!

This oughtta be good... Although it was the London & Port Stanley Ry (L&PS). In their final days, at least one was sitting in Newfoundland serving as a parts source for their G8's.

Well, it was near impossible until Hobbytec finally got a Paypal account, I was going to have to go to the bank to wire money initially. I did attempt to order it on the website but the page kept timing out so I started conversation by email, having to translate to Portuguese. They now have paypal and will attempt to converse in English so the 4 months of attempts came to fruition within days of them getting paypal.
It cost $180 USD for 2 shells that come with sideframes, fuel tank, spare steps and clear precut windows. Quaility is Kaslo-esque with a little bit of surface scratching from sandpaper. (Mr. Surfacer primer should cover that up) These guys (Gilso and Pavlo) are serious builders and into scale quality. They removed the dynamic brake blisters off the side of the short hood for me, and changed the pilots to footboard style. The dyn brake fan is still on the roof, but an easy coverup by styrene.
Shipping was an amazing 10 days from Brazil!
I'm going to make a square-stock brass frame for it and rig some Athearn SW trucks to it. There is no commercially available chassis with this length.
The longhood is kinda tight, but I can fit an Atlas S4 motor in there without much trouble.

Sean,
Hey, that looks like a cool model. Will be neat to see it finished, pretty much a one of a kind model too!
Good luck! Brian

It certainly is! 992 was one of a kind on CN with that style truck and rounded cab roof. 991 had a spartan cab roofline and diff trucks. There were alot of G8s on CN, but they had different A-1-A trucks, some narrow gauge and hood door arrangements were diff from the G12s.
I am charged to do this one because the Brazilian version is so close to this CN version. L&PS bought these units because they were locally built at GMDD in London and cheaper than SW9s at the time.

Buy a soon-to-be-announced Rapido GMD1, and stash its trucks under the shell...

Just emailed hobbytec, so now I;ll wait for the reply, its rare and CN had one, so It'll will have to end up in yellow and green ! ust another question before, does it come with the same trucks shown under the CN photos, or will I have to so some modifications? Thanks again

Be patient with them, replies usually come the next day. It comes with sideframes only. They are the same axle spacing as SW trucks. CN had standard Gauge G8s, so you'll have to mod the G12 slightly. The cab roof, carbody louvers and numberboards differed. The trucks were a weird A1A truck too, which made it a smaller fuel tank too. Here's a couple pics...852 and 854. One of them ended up with Inco in Thompson Manitoba 208-something was the number. www.cnrphotos.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=12678

Those 850-series units are funny: the B-B trucks appear to be the oddball A1A ones without the centre axle. Sort of like what CN later did to some of their RSC13's.
Of course, the A1A 800's were all narrow gauge...probably the same truck with different wheel gauging.

Going thru my research, and have a question, I have drawings of both the G-8 ( from and old RMC), and the G-12, I think from Hobbytec, and pictures of both models, but little info. Do you know if the G-8 and G-12, are the same body, the difference being the 8-567 in the G-8, and the 12-567 in the G-12. From the photos they look very close, but have many that also dont match. If its for the sack of some louvres, then I can keep it in the Green and Yellow. Bonus!

Jake, comparing photos, the basic carbody looks the same. There are some differences like louvres, brake ratchet location, addition of hood doors on short hood, but the G8 and G12 are probably built with the same frame/carbody (similar to the SW8/900 and SW9/1200 being built on the same basic frame/carbody).
That said, there can be differences between orders, like the trucks and square vs round cabs on the two ex-L&PS units. Maybe it's just me, but the steps on the ex-L&PS units look narrower than the pure CN ones.
