This is my first post so I hope I am putting it in the right catagory. I have been working on two Kato HO ATSF SD45's. I normaly start with undecorated units and do the total paint and detail. I ended up with these already painted units and wanted to detail them up. On the items that needed painted ATSF yellow I used Floquil If I remember right. I started them and had to leave the project for awhile. Anyway I got them back out to finish and noticed the the yellow I painted with became a totaly different shade of yellow than the factory Kato yellow. Anybody know what Kato used at the factory. The two different shades are really not acceptable. I did also notice that the factor painted sill from Kato is not the same as the cab war bonnet.

Hey Hobo,
Welcome to the Detailer. I think there may be some threads already in this forum. I know we have been through the Great Debate before. Santa Fe yellow is a very elusive color to describe much less reproduce. Matching the Kato color or matching their lettering or Microscale decals? I have heard the old Accu-Paint was a good match for the Microscale decals. Kato yellow for me usually involved Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow and a few drops of ATSF red and maybe some Boxcar Red. Go easy on the mix, it dries out darker than it looked in the jar. To match the Microscale decals I usually use the Reefer Yellow, ATSF Red and White. I'm afraid the number of drops differs as to the mix. Brushing on your paint or airbrushing will cause serious color shifts also. Things also seem to go better with a white or UP hopper car gray primer. Maintenance of Way gray has too much blue in it. Whatever you do, make sure you get all of the old Floquil off.
Cheers, Mike
