To the best of my knowledge EMDX 70 served as a Tier 3 testbed, the buldged out turbo section (minus the roof fan) has found it's way onto production SD70ACes. This is UP 9900, a Tier 3.5 compliant SD59MX and as you can see uses particulate filters above the engine compartment to help reduce emissions. And this is UP 8394 which is at LaGrange testing a similar setup but is also running DEF out of that drum beside the walkway, from what I have found it's close to Tier 4 but not quite....

Hi Damian, I like the look of the SD70ace. I can't wait to see some paint on it. I like your explanation of how the LSCR came about to purchase the SD70ace. I think you should revise your explanation to say EMD retrofitted the engine to meet the current tier of emissions standards at the time of the purchase for no additional up charge. Which the LSCR took advantage of this upgrade, which would lead to additional cost savings. I my line of work it is not uncommon for the manufacture to offer the customers free technology upgrade to help close the deal. If it convinces the powers to be to sign on the dotted line. The odds that EMD would upgrade the engine to tier 4 for a regional is very slim. For a few reasons. First it would be a prototype, which would make parts hard to get. Second there would be no factory tech support, because of the prototype factor. Third because of the lack of tech support, there would be no factory training for repairing the engine. But in the end the most important thing to remember is that it is your railroad and you dictate the history. So if you want to stick to your guns and say the EMDX 70 is tier 4 compliant and it makes you happy. Go for it! Who am I to say the tier 4 would look different. Heck they have not even been built yet. I look forward to seeing your progress on this project. Erik

LSCR just bought 2 ex-UP SD9043MACs that UP had put in storage, and 2 ex-NS ( in CR paint) C32-8s from LTEX, 4 GP60s from UP and 2 GP60Bs from BNSF. Traffic is really picking up for this road, KCS has worked out a deal with the RR to run a once a week rock(Ballast) train to and from the rock quarry. The power on the train will be KCS power the norm SD50s. Also new traffic includes an daily crude oil train, that gets handed off from KCS(via CP in Kansas City) at Gibsland,LA. This train runs to Jasper,TX where its unloaded at the Lone Star Trans-Unload Facility and its O-GBJA, also a new coal train has been added on that runs from Crosset to Port Arthur C-COPA. LSCR was seeking a way to get of using the UP trackage rights to reach its Texas Extension, so the RR found a dormant Line that ran from Alexandria to Ville Platte ( old Rock Island Line) the from there was the L&D RR which ran from Ville Platte to Eunice then to Crowley where it interchanges with BNSF, and it also had trackage from Eunice to DeRidder but that line laid dormant and unused, and in bad shape. So LSCR bought the L&D from Gulf Coast Industries, and bought the old RI line from the state and started an hard and intense year long project of getting the lines up to LSCR specs which is CWR rail and etc. With the Addition of these more heavier trains being added on to the system, LSCR had leased 6 AC4400s from CEFX. With the RR a tad power short even with the recent buys, the RR is looking in to buying 4 more SD40-2s and sending em through a New Rebuild program at its shops called Deep South Repower.
