Guys, I know many of you have had to remove the noses and battery boxes from Athearn locomotives and have found that the Athearn shell wants to wiggle or to shift from side to side while you are sawing the plastic to remove the parts. To help solve this problem I have designed a "tool" which makes it easier to remove these parts. It is a very simple tool to make and cost is not a factor when it comes to having one. Look at the photo below and you can see what I'm referring to. All of the measurements are on the photo for you to see and use. The length of the block is critical as is the width between the two grooves shown if the tool is to be as useful as it can be. The width of the block is not a critical factor and can be narrowed to fit your hand if need be. The tool you see can be used from the very first saw cut all the way to the final sanding. Bob

It also allows you to do the finish sanding and be ready to install the new Cannon battery boxes and nose. Bob

BOB Greetings Sir what is the depth of the two groves on this jig? or do I take my caliper and measure it from the walk way to the bottom of the sill just behind the cab? Thanks Terry

Bob, very nice and simple. Great idea.
Steve, there is no need to remove the battery boxes on an Athearn RTR model. The sides pop off leaving a nice base that you can add any Cannon & Co battery box side to. Now if yo want to add the Cannon tread plate. That is easy too. Since you can pop off the battery box sides, you do nto have to be concerned about destroying them. Cut the tread plate portion off the Cannon part and transplant it into the Athearn battery box top. Then put your new sides on.
