Group, I have photographed alot of UP's SD40N's. If anyone is interested in these unit's I'll download some pictures. I've photographed them from all angles.

Union Pacific is rebuilding (what I've read) 500 ex CNW, UP SD40-2s. The "N" stands for North Little Rock rebuild.

It's interesting that they dropped the "-2" from the nomenclature. I thought they usually left that in there to indicate that a model has that the Dash-2 technology, but maybe UP doesn't? I do seem to recall that when they rebuilt a bunch of UP / SP SD40s and SD45s a while back, they may not have followed that naming convention.

Dave There's nothing new about Dash2 technology, as its a relic from the 70s. There are very few pure dash 2s left on class 1 rr's, and I'm not aware of any class one RR's rebuilding back to dash 2 status. We railfans and modelers perpetuate the classification due to its external features. Internally, there's little Dash-2 left in these Ns. I'd be willing to bet UP put new computerized diagnostic systems and microprocessor control in these units, doing away with the dash 2 'card' system and solid-state circuitry which EMD used to classify the line.

Sean is absolutely correct. To rebuild the control systems to the Dash 2 technology is a step backwards. All upgrades in power control are driven by the latest technology.
