Do you know I had a sneaky suspicion when I asked that question, that they might be brass. They still look impressive and yes more phots would be great!

I actually built a model of the EMD GP49 a few years ago. I did not go to teh extreme of changing the doors but the roof, cab, etc where all done. I used the Athearn GP 50 for the base of the model. I am unable to post pics of the unit at this time being deployed but could do so in about 2 months if any one here is interested. It was good enough with the pics of the prototype next to the model to win 1st place in a NMRA show soon after I completed the model.

So what did you do to it, just change the three fans to two? I'm intrigued to know what length you had to (or didn't have to) go to, to win. Not wishing to slight your effort, please don't take it that way, I would do the same, but would never have thought to enter a competition with something like that! Lol.

The GP 49 is nice but the paint looks a little to thick in some shots maybe it's the lighting .I wished one of the parts makers would make the toilet water fill .And I think Bob Harpe could make a great model of the GP49 and Randy also The dynamic brake section seems like it would be the most challenging part to model it looks like it has the angled hatch like on a GP 38-2 with the brake blisters extended almost to the inertial filter hatch/she is a beautiful model thanks for sharing

Just discovered this old thread.... I built one the "easy way" many years ago. I just reworked the Q fans and shortened one of the inertial grilles, along with the Cannon cab/nose treatment. I've always been interested in building a model of the Katy version. This thread led me to the Tom Busack article, which is in a copy of MR headed my way today. I think I have a GP50 laying around I could rework this way. But then again, Athearn just announced these in April, so I'm tempted to wait until next year for the ultimate version. www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=ATHG+GP39-2&CatID=THLDwww.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG64620What I really need to do are those Kennecott GP39-2s that got their high cabs cut down before going to Katy. In my area it was pretty rare to see one of the GP49 carbody versions without one of the ex-Kennecott versions in the consist.

I built one using the MR article quite some time ago. I later sold it to make room for new projects. Well worth the work involved. Mine was an ex-MKT painted UP. Cyrus would one of you guys consider reposting the MR GP39-2 artic[e ? i used to have it but lost (all of my model magazine collections) home and property !8 months ago. i'm trying to restart my kit bashing scratch building abilities now i have the time. by the way nice looking models

Randy, by now I'm sure you know that Aspen is already done a model of the gp39x if you can find them they did a great job. I have used one of those omitting the high Hood short nose to duplicate a gp49 as built for the Alaskan Railroad will have to post some pictures when I get more time at any rate it's a good starting point if you could get the body parts separately don't particularly enjoy the cost of the Genesis series locomotive. They are great if you're not doing any kitbashing can't I for one can't justify the cost of a few of them to make a decent representation of the Prototype. Have been looking for other alternatives. But nowadays trying to buy blue box parts is getting quite ridiculous and overly expensive these people seem to think that a $7 shell in blue box form is worth five times the money wish they would come down to more reasonable alternatives

Paul, Randy Earle died about three years ago, and we lost many of his photos when his photo hosting site went dark (probably due to non-payment after his demise.) Please feel free to carry on this subject with your efforts!

Thank you Randy for the update it's really a shame we are losing so many good supporters Builders and contributors can't imagine what this Hobbies going to be like in 5 or 10 years if they don't price us out of kid bashing we would be too feeble to do the stuff ourselves I for one no I am experiencing some difficulties due to the health concerns which seem to follow Advanced age. I thought once I retired and got back to a normal routine of civilized hours things would be a little easier when it came to building but After experiencing my wife's death and the associated Financial devastations relocation and downsizing I don't seem to feel as much enthusiasm is in the past I really starting to work at trying to continuing my modeling endeavors

I feel your pain, my brother. My own wife died on 12/12/2022, and I am still dealing with all the same issues as you. Already sold her car, looking into selling her house and down-sizing myself. Modeling is certainly on hold for now.
