I've had people ask me, (NKP modelers in particular) if the Alco RS-36 had grabs behind the cab like the RS-11s did. Here's a pic, and I don't see any. Attachments:

They had grabs on the Firemans (Left) side behind the cab, at least on the D & H 36's.
Oddly, the D & H RS11s' did not have grabs behind the cab! Both on the original Hi nose and subsequent Lo nose versions.
Apparently the presence or absence of grabs is dependent on the individual batch of locomotives.

The NKP RS-36's did not have grabs behind the cab. I had drilled out all the locations before I found a picture that showed no grabs, so I had to fill all the holes and file off the nut and bolt detail. Also there is a grab on top of the end of the long and short hood and two extra curved grabs on the nose. Here is a picture that Tony Koester sent me of the long hood of an Ex-NKP Unit. Rick J

Thanks for the photo Rick. That looks like the Brewster shop, I've been there many times.

The NKP units were all built between February to August 1962 and the D&H units were built in January to February of 1963. Maybe the D&H units were a later upgrade to include the grabs behind the cab ? The D&H RS36's also had dynamic brakes where-as the NKP did not - maybe required for maintenance of some sort ?
Mark.

NYC RS-32's (Similar Car Body) had the grabs behind the cab and they were built in 61 and 62.
The grabs were probably a railroad option. And other than NKP's bell location option all NKP engines were plain jane.
No NKP units had dynamic brakes as they were a flatland railroad.

On the D&H Unit, What is that hump on the Dynamic Brake Blister?

The Nickel Plate didn't have dynamic brakes on anything.

It's an increased air flow intake for cooling the dynamics.
