Some years ago, I bought a pair of HO hi-hood GP50's ready-to-run for some USD60. They came factory painted in Norfolk Southern & Southern Railway. I decided to keep the original paint without repainting them entirely to save my time and cost. The stock models were indeed pretty simple in appearance without a lot of body details but they featured with headlights, fly-wheels as well as reasonable drive. To improve their appearance, I used quite a number of commercial detail parts. First of all, I started with their pilots that I think they were the most unrealistic areas of all (e.g. filling up the large opening with styrene sheet, adding snow plows, mu cables & air hoses, etc). For the trucks, I formed the brake pipes with wires and attached them between each pair of brake cylinders. I also added sand pipes which were made from fine styrene rods. Next I installed speed recorders. Additional details & pipes e.g. over-flow pipes, air-tank pipes, etc. were also added around the fuel tanks. I installed firecracker antennas & lift rings on their roofs. I attached wipers, wind deflectors and sunshades to the windows. Then grab irons were added on hood ends (note I did not remove those molding grab irons for convenience, you may want to file them away before adding separate ones). Thereafter I applied decals of diesel locomotive data, builder¡¦s plate and number board with the help of a few prototype photos. Next I attached some walkway lights along the hoods too. I weathered the Southern unit because I wanted to compare the result between them. The models seemed to be given a new life. They look completely different now. Here are the pics of the stock GP50's:Pics of the finished models:

These are the most detailed stock paint Bachmann units I ever seen! Good job! Earl is out...

I agree-great work on the pilots!
Did these come with grab iron drilling dimples or cast grab irons? I've never actually bothered to check out a Bachmann product up close so I don't know. The pictures look good anyway, so I can't even tell!

The pictures look good anyway, so I can't even tell! Thanks for all the nice words in the first place. The original grab irons were actually molded plastic on the loco body and replaced with separate metal ones. I didn't bother to file them off (to avoid damaging the original paint) but just drilled holes and installed the metal grab irons to cover them. You can't tell unless using a magnifier. This was a kitbashing project of about 15 years ago. Those pics were taken by the first generation Sony digital camera. Sorry for the poor pic quality. Will take some better pics when there is a fine sunny day here.

Some huge improvements on the stock units, that's for sure. I like the way they look with the added details.

I imagine there are a few people who would have laughed at the idea of turning Bachmann units into something nice, and yet you've done it and done a great job of it. Amazing what you can do with some detail parts and a little weathering. They look really good.

Those look great. I would never consider buying a Bachmann unit, but you've really done a great job of detailing them up and almost make me think twice about picking one up.
How do they run compared to Athearn/Atlas and other more expensive brands?

They look great. I am hoping to do the same with the two Bachmann D&H RF-16's I have.

How do they run compared to Athearn/Atlas and other more expensive brands? Thanks again for all the nice comments. As for performance, to be honest, they run....umm.....just so so. After all, they are economy products of about 17 years old. In my opinion, Atlas engines run best among the three.

I once used a Bachmann drive with an atlas master GP40 shell...no one to this day has noticed the bachmann trucks under it!
Great job!

These both look fantastic. You did a super job on them and if they ever stop running well then I would either turn them into dummies or just set them up front on the layout in a siding or yard so people can admire the work you have done to them.
Great job.

I agree they look great. If they ever give up the ghost I would concider replacing the drive with a Athearn blue box GP38-2 -GP50 unit.Mine are newer Bachmanns and run strong but I would not hesitate to replace the drives if the Bachmann's crap out.

Anybodynknow of a source for the correct fans for a GP50.I looked on the Cannon site but could not find then there .The Bachmann fans are slightly undersized and a bit lacking in detail.
