You know; with a little effort, those old wide-body GE's don't look bad at all. This inspires me to get crackin' on that U30B I've got sitting around.

I could not agree more chessie8553! I have an athearn U33B. rock island, red paint, it needs a lot of tlc, the motor got smashed, the sidetrucks are mostly junk. The shell and frame are exlt. shape. These locos seem to be hard to find. Its hard to get anything around here there is no LHS for 100 miles around here, it really sucks

Thanks guys for the nice comments; I appreciate it. Here are some updated photos: After reviewing all the photos and the prototype photos, I realized I should have used the SCL lettering from the Microscale main diesel decal sheet and not the "compressed lettering" from the split image decal sheet. The main SCL decals from Microscale are setup for U-boats without adjusting the spacing between the characters, unlike with EMD projects. I removed the lettering with Solvaset and touched up the paint with Badger Modelflex Engine Black. I applied the "proper lettering" from the Microscale 87-896 SCL decal sheet. I also applied warning signs from Microscale data sheet 87-527 and ACI plates from Microscale MC-4280. The unit was weathered with a wash of Pollyscale Grimy Black and purified water. Additional weathering was applied with a wash of Pollyscale Earth, Grimy Black and 70 percent isoprophyl alcohol. I also added the rear corner grabirons (16" in length; behind the side louvers) made from .010 wire.

Taking off those decals took a LOT of guts, Carl, but, judging from your latest post, it was worth it! And your weathering is spot-on!!

Holy cow! That is a beautiful model! Good job man! As it was said a few posts above, "Just because its an old blue box doesnt mean its not worth upgrading. Nice looking model!" Couldn't have said it better myself!

Luv those pig faces! In SCL paint, its hard to tell it's a widebody! has me rethinking my old Athearn U bodies in my scrap pile!

Looks pretty good! I used to have a whole fleet of D&H GE's that were Athearns.

Cool unit. I always liked the way the EMD trucks looked on these. My Chessie U-23-B units have the same. My first real HO locomotive ever was a Chessie 'U-30-B" 2307. It was also my first detail job when I was 13. At some point I'll throw some pics up here. I used the EMD trucks on it when I upgraded the frame. Oddly, it was also my first re-power with a GSB "Tan Can" motor. Boy does that unit run smoothly. I'll never give it up or sell it.

How did you model the sand lines? It doesn't look like you used the plastic brackets from DW...

First of all, thank you folks for all the kind comments. This was a fun project, and the unit runs well with Atlas and Proto units on my club's layout in Largo, FL.
To EMDX6043, for the sand lines, I used the lead wires from Miniatronics 1.5volt bulbs. the wire is solid and the coating makes a good hose. You may find angel hair solder works well also.

Sorry for the late post as I have not visited this forum in a long while.
What a beautifully detailed transformation! Carl as always, outstanding high quality work. I hope that you still plan on installing DCC sound in this U-Boat. I can imagine a YouTube clip featuring this locomotive on a layout, leading an SCL lashup hauling a phosphate train as it emits the classic GE "Chug-chug" sounds from a Hi-Bass speaker :-)
