Only option is scratchbuilding, no one in Aus really models the ore railways in the Pilbara.

info swiped from the MR website: If you want info for the Iron Ore Railways of Australia I'll post a couple of websites that might be of use? www.hamersleyiron.com/www.railways.pilbara.net.au/www.roberiver.com/operations/pilbararail.htmlwww.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?railroad=Pilbara%20Railwww.holiday-wa.net/loco.htmwww.railways.pilbara.net.au/ Roster + Pics The railways started with a small loco roster the roster can be found at the Pilbara Railways Historical Society's website above. (holiday-wa.net) Over the years, the railways of the Pilbara have run some interesting locos, from standard C636's, M636's, C36-7's, SD50's, Dash-8's, Dash-9's, AC4400's, AC6000's and soon SD70ACe's. Currently there are a few SD40 or SD40-2's used as second or helper units as well as switching of yards and loaders and unloaders. I know that the C36-7's and the SD50's were built locally in Australia with the C636's and M636's were rebuilt to dash-8's. The C36-7's and SD50's were sold to American loco lease companies and I have seen both models on American rails in pictures. I think that the C36-7's went to Minnesota Commercial and I'm not sure about the SD50's. I think that they belong to NREX? Incidently, I forgot to add that most of the rebuilt loco's if not all from the C636/M636 models had had a unique cab added. Here it's called a "Pilbara Cab". It's a big boxy style cab, I don't know what the room was like in them, but I think that they were better than the old ALCo/Montreal Cabs. I know that the cabs were all airconditioned because of the extreme heat up there and the cabs had extra insulation. The cab was used on the on the dash-8's with the exception of the C36-7's which had the standard GE spartan cab. Also, you'll need to scratchbuild the ore cars as there is no-one building models of these car in any scale. The cars have a load capacity of 106 tonnes of ore.

The hamersy iron sd50 units were on the utah railway, I'm not sure if they are still on the roster or not, last time i checked they were. I dont really want to build the ore cars, I want to build the locos and paint them for my railroad to use as hauling coal in ky.

Is that a C36-7 hood and engine block on a C-636 chassis and trucks with a weird cab on it???[/quote]
The Australian licensee for GE is , I think Ginigan or something like that, and they built dash8 and 9 locos using existing cores, many of which were MLW or Alco 6 axle units. Diesel Era did an article on these sometime in the 90's.
Note also that the cab roof has a second 'skin' located above the cab roof with a small air space. This helps keep the cab cool as the sun doesn't beat directly on the cab roof.

THe H-I SD50's were built by Clyde, the EMD licensee. They were purchased by NREX in the late 90's during the motive power crunch of the merger-mania era... I've actually been in them--standard EMD cab, with some nice custom features, like a 6-CD changer and AM/FM Radio, with JBL speakers in the cab (so you can listen to Men at Work while you *are* Men at Work!). And it had a microwave! (These are all deluxe for us US Based train crews--we're lucky to get an icebox!) ALso, the horn was mounted on the fireman's side long hood behind the dynamic brake grid intake. Eventually, the units, which were leased by the Indiana Rail Road for 2 years, ventured out to Utah Railway, which has a penchant for odd locomotives--they also roster all three MK5000's!
Oh--and if anyone makes that cab as a kit or aftermarket add on, I'm in!!! Thats too cool to pass up...

The C-36-7's probably went to NREX as well. That's where the Minnesota Commercial got their one unit. BTW, they nicknamed it the 'Crocodile GE'. They also have an ex-BN C-30-7 and 2 ex-Santa Fe SF-30-7's, and Cat-rebuild M-630, as well as their 4 axle GE's and Alco's.

I just found out that the pilbara cab was made as a resin kit by Kaslo Shops. And I just checked their website, and it appears to be under construction...Perhaps they have a few still sitting around they'd be willing to sell!

Wrong cab, thats the CN style one Hammersley Iron and subsequently ROBE and Pilbara Rail/Iron got on their C44-9WM's and ES44DCi's.

Did the 36-7's get standard cabs when they came over a la ex-Kennecott GP39-2's?
I saw one of the Hammersly SD50's in SLC 2 years ago and shot a bunch of pics, but I think the card got deleted. It was really cool to see all the subtle differences that said "this isn't what you think you're looking at."

Wow - That IS nice ! I have no use for one, but still .... very well done.
I'm so glad there's people out there willing to take the time and effort to make these kind of projects and make them available to the masses. It's opening up a whole new world of modelling.
Mark.

This is great. I've wanted to build one of these for awhile, and I have the kaslo dash-9 cab as well so I can build a set :-)
