If it is at Homewood, Il, it may not be for much longer. Most CN units go there to die.

I hear NS's early C39-8E units are easy to build.

Just need a C40-8 atlas shell and a C30-7 fuel tank. A little grinding and you have a C39-8E

I have been considering building a NS C39-8E since Atlas came out with the C40. The most notable differences are the air reservoirs are like a earlier GEs (C30-7) ahead and after the fuel tank. Also the drop step is located below walk way level. I have not counted the hood doors or compared that part, But it sure is not noticeable if there is a difference. These units as far as GE's go are next on the chopping block and will be up for retirement. So get'em while you can... Here is a shot of the last C39-8E I got on a NS Grain train. David S.

I built a couple years ago for a customer using RPP and Athearn parts. Nice photo David.

I have checked all of the doors vs. Atlas and everything is same. I did miss the step but that is easy fix.

Part of the reason I chose one of the first ones is they look odder, they don't have that recessed drop step and no ditchlights to wire....at least on the Conrail versions. The Conrail have a full width anticlimber

The C39-8 is my favorite loco. I guess that is why I coughed up the dough and have 2 Overland ones. I have not yet painted one and half considered making a horse head out of it just to see how much uglier I could make it with the white numberboards. Luckily I am stickler for prototype and won't do this.
