How does one anneal brass wire? So you simply heat the wire and let it cool or is it more involved then that? Thanks.

Thanks, Randy! After a few hours of doing this, I had to visit with Gentleman Jack to smooth up the rough nerve endings! You mean you didn't before you started? ;D As my grandpa would say CRIPSE!

Charlie, I use an alcohol burner, heat the wire until it glows and let it slowly cool without quenching in water. On smaller diameter wire, (.006" to .016"), I polish the brass wire with steel wool and heat it until it just changes color from shiny yellow to dull orange, then let it cool. The thing to remember is that when you work brass, it hardens and becomes brittle. So when you are making multiple bends in brass wire, you should anneal it between bends in a heat source, so your wire doesn't break.

Thanks, Glenn! I hope to have some more work done next week. Once I finish the handrails, I will start modifying the pilot plates with new draft gear buffers.

"Still working on the issue of adapting Athearn HT-C side frames to fit the Atlas truck assemblies. Comments and suggestions are always welcome!"
Have you considered swapping the trucks out for Kato SD40 trucks?

Have you considered swapping the trucks out for Kato SD40 trucks? No, Carl, I was trying to use what I had on hand. However, that is an excellent suggestion and I may give it a try, if I can get a set cheap!

Robert I was checking out a bras UP SDP35 the other day and I noticed it had the same hand rail setup as all of the SD28's. Checked photos and sure enough the UP units were ordered with the SD28 hand rail setup. I thought I had a great idea till I checked Atlas's website and looked at their SDP35's but they're all the same SD35 hand rail setup no matter what road you order. Bummer. BTW UP and L&N units have the SD28 hand rail setup.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Mark. I can't explain why, except maybe it has something to do with making the mounting of the vertical railings more rigid?
On the prototype, the hand rails are not all one piece, but are assembled in sections at various points. These joints can be seen at stanchions with bolted top brackets instead of those stanchions with rolled (formed loop) ends. This method of attachment also helps with replacement of damaged or bent rails.

Yeah I noticed the assembly bolts too! I wonder if Smokey Valley have these details for their SD35 sanctions? I did find one SD28 that does have the SD35 hand rail setup. Reserve Mining #1233. Out of four the first one is different Didnt C&GR SD28's come after the RM units? Maybey they built the first one and decided it needed to be changed.

Mark, the C&G units were EMD serial numbers 30704 (#701) and 30705 (#702), built in September of 1965. The RM units were also done in 1965, however, I am not sure what month EMD turned them out.

The photo below shows the prototype and I want to duplicate the front end arrangement shown as close as possible, and still have a working coupler. This is what the model looks like now, with the stock Atlas coupler box fitted to the front end.

I cut the coupler box down so it fits inside the opening, but clears the pilot plate enough so I can add the front end detail. And I cleaned up the box so Sergent couplers will fit properly. Using styrene sheet, I narrowed the opening to .210" (to clear the Sergent coupler shank) and will start building up the components of the draft gear buffer and bearing plate (carrier iron).
