Ya know, I think I might have to add an SD-28 to the Minnesota Midland roster. Seems a mysterious accident will have happened and one of the AS-616's went downhill into the river. Or maybe two will be transferred to the MM from one of the SPSL's other subsidiaries once the ex-CGW Winona MN to Osage IA line was taken over and assigned to the Midland. This is the same reason for the first of the Midland's first SD-39 orders as well.

Did you make the pipe brackets on the end of the fuel tank? Thanks, Uncle Jay! Yes, all the (white) parts are made from styrene. The brackets are .005" sheet, the fuel sight glasses are .010" rod, the fittings on the ends are square stock and the pipes are .025" rod.

I have finished roughing in the air plumbing and temporarily attached the tool basket to check the fit.

The C&G ordered the SD28's with Vapor Company "Scotch Watchman" standby heaters (which were located in the long hood end, behind the air compressor) to protect the diesel engine from freezing weather. For the model, this meant changing the location of the sand filler on the long hood end and adding a rain bonnet for the heater stack in the place of the sand filler. I laid out the location of the sand filler, drilled a hole and opened it up with a square file. I glued the filler to a section of styrene and placed it in the opening at a 45-degree angle. Another view. The rain bonnet is turned from styrene rod, the pattern of which was taken from a standard bonnet used on the stacks of home hot water heaters.

The Atlas SD35 handrail stanchion locations do not match for this SD28 build, so I begin by filling the pre-drilled holes in the frame, in order to relocate the stanchions. Lay out the stanchion locations by drawing a center line. Measure for spacing and mark the frame for drilling new holes for the stanchions. Cut the handrails to fit the new spacing. This will mean adding new handrail sections to replace those we will modify. I will use .015" phosphor bronze wire for the new sections. Drill the frame. Drill the ends of the stanchions .020" to accept the modified (shortened) handrail. Test fit the handrail/stanchions to their new locations on the frame and use ACC to cement the end handrail into the drilled stanchion.

Hey Robert, what did you use to fill the handrail holes? I'll have to look at the other SD28's and see if their handrails are different too. Maybe I'll need to change mine. BTW, looks fantastic so far!

BTW, looks fantastic so far! Thanks, Mark. The holes measured .026", so I used .025" styrene rod to fill the pre-drilled holes. I dipped the ends of the styrene in Gunze "Mr. Dissolved Putty" to take care of any slop in the fit. Give the filler 24 hours to dry, and once it sets up, trim it flush with the frame.

Robert, apparently all SD28's have the different handrail sections from the SD35's. Thanks for the info on filling these as I will have to change mine now too.

Scott and Paul, thanks for your comments. I am currently working on the modified handrail sections that will complete the left side. Those sections are made from phosphor bronze wire to replace the acetal plastic sections I removed earlier.

Thank you, guys, for those kind comments! It looks like the right side handrails are going to take a bit more effort. I will post the progress as it happens. Still working on the issue of adapting Athearn HT-C side frames to fit the Atlas truck assemblies. Comments and suggestions are always welcome!

I've gotta agree with Randy on the handrails, I dont think I'd be able to do that. They look perfect installed on the loco!
