Just won the images of the Los Angeles Jct. Ry #1 on eBay & thought you folks would like to see it. Also shown are the unit's specs & an image of it in the later white zebra stripes. So will probably do one of my S-2s in this scheme & the rest in zebra stripes. No. 2 came on the same date w/ the rest of the S-2 & S-4s coming between 1946 & 1953. Here's a link to the images in Picasa: tinyurl.com/25pmyp4Anyone know of a person who can do the decals for these engines?

The J had 5 S-2s & 2 S-4s. Plan on having all 7 & do #1 in original paint. Eventually want to get a couple of 0-6-0s so #1 will fit into early '40s operations. Here's a link below to the J's engine Roster which shows the overlap between the 0-6-0s & 1st ALCOs. Also shown is "LOS ANGELES JUNCTION RY" lettering. Having done alot of individual #s on locos, don't really want to try that LOOOOOONG one! LOL tinyurl.com/2vdx4x2A check of Microscale shows that the white stripes needed for the J's stripes are not available now. So sent them an email to see if they have any plans to do them.

The Microscale Santa Fe zebra stripe set might work. I've never measured the size of the stripes but they look pretty close. Might be an option.

Lo & behold the zebra stripes are white like the LAJ zebra stripes. LOL The Lettering, #s & thin stripes are aluminum though. See the 3rd image in my original post to see #1 in zebras. So looks like I'll just need to find someone to do the LAJ lettering & #s. Hopefully can get away w/ using Accu-paint Santa Fe blue for the shell.

Someone's question on the Atlas DCC got me to thinking about how to put sound in my S2/4s. My reply (cajon) is 6th one. What do you folks think?

I hope that you will be sharing some shots soon of your models. I grew up around the LAJ and these old soldiers use to perform above and beyond the call of duty. Often when leaving my grandmother's home in Maywood, Ca., we would be caught in the evening time by a single unit hauling a mile-plus string of passenger cars to the ATSF yard... very fond memories indeed!!!

Hey Andy,
Just caught this thread. So, have you progressed along with any of the S units yet? If you haven't found a sound solution, then Tsunami might be the answer.
I installed a decoder in an Atlas S-2 for a friend, so I'm familiar with them. I would suggest using the N-gauge Tsunami. In the newer releases Atlas may have that built in space in the weight for a speaker. I think RailMaster Hobbies may make a drop-in for them.

Hi Andy, You might want to try contacting Eric Ethridge at E.L.S. Trains www.elstrains.com 423-899-6156 Eric has done some set for me and has great customer service. if you don't like the decal he will make it right. His prices a very reasonable. This is a side business for Eric as he works in the emergency services field, so some times it takes a few days to get a answer. I am very happy with his service and work. Erik

And if neither of those two don't work out for decals then Jim and Highball Graphics will probably do them for you. He did my proto-freelanced decals for me and they came out awesome.

To Update on my progress so far. Had Rail Graphics make the LAJ ALCO decals It cost around $40.00 for 25 sets. Have 8 extras willing to sell for $2.00 each plus postage. Found Microscale (87-1161) & Champ (EH-127S) make the white zebra stripes. Will have to find the right size white stripe around the long hood & above the nose zebras. No stripe on rear ones.

Here's the rear of LAJ #3. The stacks on all the LAJ ALCOs are a little taller than the cabs. Have Atlas & 1 Bachmann to work with to Make LAJ versions. The stacks on both are removable so have to find 1' dia OD to replace the model ones. The LaJ stacks don't have the rim like the models have. Anyone changed Bachmann S-4 trucks to S-2?

Atlas-Roco and Walthers-Proto have both made S-1's, S-2's, S-3's and S-4's. Smokey Valley used to make sideframes #119 to fit Alco-Blunt Sideframes onto Athearn trucks. None of the above trucks will fit Bachmann unless their drives have changed a bunch. Were those old LAJ locos really blue or were they like the ATSF zebras in black and white/aluminum? The LAJ is a perfect RR to model as you can do the whole roster and some very interesting switching districts and areas without having to compress the physical plant much.
Enjoy, Mike

Enjoy, Mike No The LAJ ALCOs were definitely Santa Fe blue w/ white zebra stripes as per my pix & Charlie Slater. See my reply below for all my LAJ ALCO pix. Have attached a copy of Charlies Switch Map of the Horn lead which should give a very good idea of the LAJ switching. Also read his notes on each industry. even if you don't model the LAJ you'll get some good ideas. See my 3/22/13 comment below about whether LAJ ALCOs were blue vs black.

Hello All Somehow someway a website was created w/ my LAJ ALCO pix. Guess Google "grabbed" them & put them in an album. Click on any image & it takes to that one then click the white "<" ">" to see the next one. Wonder if they'll will do the same w/ my CF7 & MK1200G pix? plus.google.com/u/0/photos/107389354387456095061/albums/5469286301623063329Have a list of about 15 names of guys who have shown an interest in the LAJ. Do you guys think a LAJ Yahoo Group is warranted? Let me know at karand1988@yahoo.com. Enjoy

Found something interesting about the LAJ ALCO S-2 & S-4. in their later years (post 1960?) they had beacons on both ends. Charlie Slater says they were used only for grade Xings. But in going thru all my pix of them found 4 w/ no beacons: tinyurl.com/d78tl6jTwo were slides purchased on eBay w/ 5/58 dates & one image w/ a 7/4/55 date. All sure look blue to my eyes. AND at the Bakersfield MR show 3/9/13 Charlie Slater showed me the builders plate from LAJ #4 that was definitely painted blue! Charlie hasn't gotten back to me on the Beacon installation date yet. Asked a current LAJ trainman if he could find any info on these. Also included is an image of LAJ #2 w/ a mounting bracket but no beacon. FYI: Used to be 1stcajon on this forum. Still a Santa Fe fan & since the LAJ became wholly owned by them in '72 can enjoy both RRs + SP & UP now!

Enjoy, Mike Mike Athearn makes the AAR Type A truck. Don't know if they fit on the Bachmann ALCO S-2/S-4s. The LAJ ALCO's were painted Santa Fe blue on top of black paint, not on top yellow like Santa Fe did. The LAJ zebra stripes were only about 1/2 the Santa Fe ones so will use Microscale 60-1161. Smokey Valley does/did make the ALCO S-2/S-4 handrails & getting a set off eBay. Have all the LAJ Switch Maps given to me by Charlie Slater, ex LAJ/ATSF/BNSF conductor. Just can't find a way to post them here. They are in my Picasa & have posted them to other websites.

Have just started laying track. But can't find a way to load pix from Picasa to this site.
