Looks great Fred. Makes me wonder if this would'nt be a great "what if" subject.

What does BL stand for? I'm also liking this engine.

Not sure about THIS one, but on the BL2's, it stood for "Branch Line", an EMD designation for locomotives with light axle loading for branch lines using lighter rail (60lb-75lb) sizes.

Looks nice, sir! Mine is still where it was over 10 years ago: The back of an Athearn GP38-2 shell waiting to be mated to the front of an Athearn GP60 shell. Too many other things between now and "someday"... ;D Wish my hand-painted models came out looking that good!

The concept really predates the BL20-2s with the Chessie System's B&O GP30ms being done way before the production models came out. The turbocharger was replaced with a supercharger but otherwise the engines remained the same, in appearance at least. And, as I have found out, a number of them actually survive in use on shortlines. rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?mid=318/url]The idea of EMD doing such a unit was simply too little way too late. ICG Paducah GP11s took the concept a bit further in regards to rebuilding older GPs in providing Dash-2 electricals to improve reliability and maintenance, a concept perpetrated by Livingston Rebuild Center (their GP19-1 and SD19-1), but supercharging the 16-567s really was key to providing some sort of fuel economy. Had EMD undertook such an approach a decade sooner the units might have actually proven to be successful... the market had dried up before they had even started, and delays in the units' production insured that BN, for whom the original units were intended, would have no further interest (you should never offer a locomotive for sale before everything was worked out as far as production goes, especially so two years before). Personally I like the idea of the units and if I were modeling modern I would have both these and the MK GP28-2s, since this would provide for a better short term investment to meet my road's needs (which would include rebuilt ALCOs as well... IF I were modeling modern).

Does anyone have the article from the March 1997 Model Railroader that they would be willing to share on building one of these? This thread has peaked my interest, not that I need another project.....

Hi guys; My name is Rick, from Spring, Tx. New member. I love locomotives! It seems that, for a loco that the railroads dent want, the BL20-2 is a loco a lot of modelers gotta have! I started on a pair just recently, influenced by Gordon Cannon's model. I do have the MR with article by Eric Bergstrom on kit bashing the BL20-2, but, I'm bit of a rivet counter, well at least a hood door counter, I want a little more accuracy. I would never poopoo someone elses work, I think, they are awesome. Eric's looks great switching in his intermodal yard. I have found that Proto GP20 makes a a really good base for a scratch build. I will post pics soon on my rendition of the BL20-2.

Looks great Fred. Makes me wonder if this would'nt be a great "what if" subject. I say yes, in either a WABASH or NKP paint scheme and a NKP forum on DD. Tom

I'm interested in trying to build the EMD BL20-2, specifically the SJVR 2122. I would like to use one of the Cannon & Co thin wall cabs. Does anyone know the spotting differences between the Cannon & Co. thin wall cabs (Dash 2 vs 35/40 series)? Or, which cab should I use for the EMD BL20-1? From online photos, the Cannon & Co. thin wall cabs look similar to my uneducated eye. I also trying to figure out the door, fan sizes, etc.
Also, for those who have the MR article, is a scale drawing included?
