Nice work so far!
I had a SD75M right after I got into the hobby. I had no experience with detailing models, and I didn't care for how it was assembled, nor with the details that came with the model. Anyway, I have always liked the details on the SD75M's but have never had the courage to buy one again.
With the small amount of details you added it has really made a nice difference. What steps are you using??

That is looking great. Now I want to build another one but I do not need another project. Who makes the rear view mirrors you used?

Kiro, beautiful job, as always. So I see questions so far... what brand did you use?? Mirrors? Steps? and I want to know Mu hoses? trainline hose?
YOU Might as well give us a product list and part number if it is handy, because before it is over, we all are going to want to know the full list anyway.
Again Great job, keep us posted.

For sure, if I´d started as an undecorated, I would do so... Hope this helps.

Thank you Jose, I love your work, and I especially love the fact that you are so helpful with providing us all with the detail that you do, I wish I was more about answers and less about questions, but I guess that will come with time.

That scheme was designed by EMD FOR EMD's, so no wonder it looks so good on that 75!

Okay Ive got a question for everyone. I've seen more than one post where details were added to a factory painted unit, but the whole engine wasnt stripped and repainted. How do you guys match up paint, stripes, etc. so well on these engines? Any tips/pointers?
The first thing I always end up doing on a detail project is dipping the shell in paint stripper, but like Kiro said sometimes they have such a nice paint job you just dont want to ruin it by repainting.

Hi Mike, Good question! Matching an already applied paint job is as difficult as painting a stripped model. For example, for matching the red in the SD75M, it took several efforts to get the right brand and color to get the same "shade", in fact it was a Testors enamel and the brand has many different reds to experiment with. The same happened with the silver where I found that the Floquil Old Silver is the one. When I don´t find the exact color, the match is created mixing a base color with whites, browns, reds, greens, etc. as exactly as possible. But first of all, I use white as primer where you will paint the section of the model to get the best of the pigments, 2 or 3 very thin layers will do the work. Another challenge... have you noticed that when you apply your color, lets say the ATSF yellow and you put the SANTA FE letters, both yellows simply doesn´t match? That´s when you have to be sure that the decal color and the color you will use for your model are as close as possible, otherwise no matter how perfect your paint or how detailed your model is, if the decal color is different, everything looks wrong... do you agree? Even with the same brand of decals, colors from one sheet to another there are differencies. That´s why this is an art.

I've been looking for close up photos of a Santa Fe SD75M to do a project just like this on the 2 I have. Found yours via a Bing search. Nice work! Now, its time for me to get going on my projects.

What is the difference between SD75M and SD75I? 75M has the standard widecab and the 75 I has the Isolated cab. The isolated cabs have become a EMD standard on alll new locos.

Nice job on this unit Kiro. It is not easy matching silvers or ATSF red. As far as the "I", the other main difference is not a big deal. The handrails are different in that the "I" has handrails that do not hook onto the cab from the sides. The cab is thus "Isolated". Steve Orth did a nice article building a BNSF SD75I and it explains and shows the differences. It also has a very comprehensive parts listing and excellent in process pictures. I can't remember exactly what Mag it was in.
Cheers, Mike
