I've started to built another BC Rail RS-18, the #608 This unit is an "early phase" (my words) RS-18, notice the long hood doors are all the same height and the radiator intakes on the rear are smaller then the later phase RS-18. The pilots on the 608 appear to be angled unlike many of the other BCR RS-18's, and the unit has a square fuel tank. What I've got to so far: Model is a Proto RS-18 (was a factory painted BCR unit!) with Kaslo short hood and cab front. I've removed the center air filter on the long hood, and replaced some too short doors with Cannon doors. The air intakes are photo etched pieces that were produced for a RS-18 CAT model, I was going to use Andy W and Atlas RS-36 filters until I found the photo etched stuff. For the rad intakes on the rear, I simply popped off the original Proto part, added a piece of .020 styrene, then the photo part. Re rail frogs are Miniatures by Eric, and the tread plate is from Railflyer. -Trevor

Did you make the cab face with styrene or is it a kit? The cab face is part of the Kaslo Shops RS-18 low nose kit. The horn is Miniatures by Eric, and the bell is from a Kato SD40-2 (or GP35, can't remember, it came from the scrap box) -Trevor

A ittle more progress, the 608 is now primed and ready to head to the paint booth. Yes I know the left hand cab step is bent, I fixed it after I took the photos! -Trevor

Thanks guys, I forgot to mention the hood door latches are from a Proto RS-27, I might get energetic one day and see if I can order the latches from Walthers (they do stock the RS-27 truck sideframes and fuel tanks) -Trevor

Wow! After way too long I finally finished the 608. What took so long? Well, I've been busy building my layout from the ashes of an On30 layout. New layout is BC Rail Dawson Creek Sub. So here's the newly complete 608. The last image is of extra 608 west meeting an eastbound freight at Sundance BC -Trevor

How much of a PITA was it to auger out the nose for those headlights! Awesome job!

How much of a PITA was it to auger out the nose for those headlights! Awesome job! Milling out the section for the headlights didn't take that long. I used a cutting bit (sort of like those found in a milling machine) in a drill press. The soft resin of the short hood makes it easy to cut out the channel needed to run the headlight wires. -Trevor
