Started to build an A-unit of Alco's 'Black Maria' set in 1/29. The prototype
Donor of shell, chassis, underbody, and trucks is the usual Aristo-Craft FA-unit. Not much to be modified on the underbody or wheelbase - primary the necessary lowering of the trucks' high-heeled attachment to the underbody. As a reference I used the plans in RMC 06/1975 - however, the shape of the nose in that drawing is too close to an EMD F-unit in comparison to the few availabe photos of the prototype. Modeling the correct shape of the nose is a bit difficult - it has more curvature on the upper side of the nose and more drooping from the top to the sides of the rounded edges than a F-unit.
I know of the N-scale resin kit made by an Hungarian designer - probably it is even more difficult to get the correct shape in the smaller scale. Pictures will follow soon - after I've achieved some success with my debauch of resin and putty.

It looks more like a Baby Face Baldwin...

Hi Norman I have an N-Scale vsersion, and there are some similarities to various parts of the DL-109, so you may be able to use a DL-109 shell to help you, especially round the nose and cab. I assume there is a DL-109 available in HO-Scale.
Look forward to seeing your progress. Cheers Steve

I'm sure Steve was referring to using a shell from another scale as a 3D analog for reference when modeling the contours in the larger scale.

Ha. No, Steve wasn't. He (I) misread the post and was thinking HO.
Mine is packed away following a house shift, But if you PM me, I can send you some photos that may help with some details and the nose profile.
Merry Christmas to all on the Diesel Detailer. Cheers Steve NZ

Thanks for your offers for help - finally I achieved what seems to capture the shape in the prototype photos. Some photos of the current status
A good amount of work to do like shell's details, underbody design and modification of the trucks
