I'm finally getting around to gathering parts to use as freight car loads. The first idea I wanted to try out was turning old Blue Box variety motors into something to haul around. Here are the results so far:
The flywheels will get a heavy weathering treatment, probably with acrylics and chalk embedded for that cast ingot look. I made the cradles out of some styrene strip that'll get the same thing done to them as well.
Motor cradles have also been built, but they're not done yet since I'm still figuring out how to prevent longitudinal movement. They'll have additional wood rails to prevent damage to the windings as well.

I got these weathered this morning, using a new technique with weathering powders and a surprisingly effective medium.
Motor cradles are in the background, with the ingot cradles up front. I'd call this attempt a success...took about 30 mins plus dry and clean-up time.
And the secret ingredient...

That's an awesome idea for a load and adding weight to a car all at the same time. I agree the weathering on everything did turn out great as well!
