I'm looking for some help from anybody. I getting ready to start building some locomotives for my new layout. I found a HO Atlas SD24 with the low nose. I'm wanting to do PHL unit 40 or 41, haven't decided which yet. The Atlas model seemed to be pretty close. Not knowing much about the SD18M's can anybody help me with details that I need to address.

Okay went and found several pics on rr fallen flags under miscellaneous P roads.
phl units look to be ex CNW units that started life as sd24 high hoods.
The nose does not have the slope of a standard low nose sd24 also the Cabs much closer to an sd26 cab with split center Windows not one piece.
The turbo has been removed and liberated exhaust added for a normally aspirated prime mover.
The pics show a lot jaunt over and take a gander hope this helps some.

Go to Plano Model Products site. They have the long hood conversion kits for the Southern hi hood and UP factory low hood versions. Precision National did the real conversions from SD24's removing the turbo systems and dynamic braking capabilities. I'm pretty sure CNW bought all of them. Some of the Southern hi hood units were converted to low hoods later in their lives and that's what I think you're seeing in the PHL unit you want to model. The Plano site will have a bunch more info there for you also.
