I've been wanting to do this project for a while and finally found an Athearn SW1500 at a decent price... and it was even undecorated! This engine is sort of unique in that it has a boxy MP15 style hood right in front of the cab as well as two horns. Hartford Yard Goat by Brendan_Richardson, on Flickr The second horn had already been "borrowed" for another engine by the time I took this photo I didn't have too much time tonight, so cut out part of the hood and replaced it with styrene. I also added the horns. Filing/sanding is next and I have some nice Cannon diamond tread to add to the walkways.

Interesting prototype. What's the story with the two different types of truck sideframes?

Hood cutout looks good. I didn't even notice the two different trucks until James pointed it out. That's very strange, I cant imagine there are too many prototypes for that.

The latter order of EMD SW1500s (SOU 2330 - 2347) were intended for use on branchlines, which is why they have two sets of horns. Rather unique but something Southern did basically as a default on such units even though it is doubtful the second horn really was needed since only one really would be needed to warn motorists of the coming of a train.

The prototype photo doesn't show different trucks, however Conrail SW1500's were delivered with AAR switcher trucks so one SW1500 could d have received that truck style.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I've been busy with school and work recently so I haven't had much time to work on the project. As far as the sideframes go, the prototype definitely does not have both types! I had started to change the default Athearn AAR ones out but realized it was pointless as I would be taking them back off for painting, so only one got changed.
Also thanks Jerry for the horn info. I always wondered why the Southern engines had two horns.

Progress has been very slow because of classes and work but I got some free time this morning and added most of the Cannon tread set (except the small pieces over the pilots which will go on later):
