Thanks. This is a great photo. I did not see it when I searched Flicker. I am definitely going to try and recreate that passage on my layout.

My B&M had db on the road freight power up to the GP18. Their poor track couldn't take the buff forces, so they disconnected them. They had several major wrecks due to this. The newer power came without, even though things were in good shape by the time the GP40-2 order came. I agree that the advent of extended range made db use more appealing. The thought back then was that the brake shoe wear was a cost to a car's owner. According to interchange rules, brake shoe changes are charged to the owner. The extra fuel used to stretch brake was unimportant until the 1970s fuel shortage. In cases of steep hills, retainers were used, so the engineer could have time to recharge. How about some old geeps? Spike~
I'm not sure here but thought B&M management blamed the derailments on the Dynamic brakes, or the wrong use of them some how, and not their wretched track conditions. So they have been disconnected and not ordered ever since. I have seen cab shots of some of Guilford's finest, and it is stenciled on the forward bulkhead that the dymanics are deactivated.

Of course management would blame the engineer! There were fewer times when the dynamics could be used, until the buggies were gone. The constant change in slack would have killed the conductor and flagman.
Guilford likely doesn't want to maintain dynamic brakes. There is a rule that the company has so many days to either fix them, or disconnect them, then they need a stencil saying they don't work.

Spike~ It seems like Guilford doesn't want to maintain anything. Unless NS or the commonwealth are flipping the bill, the more things change the more they stay the same.

Brian, good to see this road coming back to life. Would still love to see those GP38's that have the high mounted cab's be built.
