Gentlemen, here is a model I built for a customer of mine and I just finished it this week. It's one of the new Atlas RS-3's and I added a few detail parts and painted it in the D&H colors. I then weathered it following a prototype photo that I was given. I know it looks nasty, but most RS-3's looked this way especially toward the end of their working lives. Bob

Here is a photo of the prototype I was trying to match when weathering the 4103. Bob

That weathering is simply awesome! Too many folks weather to what they THINK it should look like. Always better to weather with a photo of the prototype in hand. Very well done sir! Thanks for sharing.

Bob,
What did you use for the dynamic brake hatch? Would work nicely on a couple of Interstates' RS3's.

This is a nice model. One small point is that the MU hoses weren't on the pilots. There were just 2, and were on the deck, right next to the walkways. Even the newer power with MU hoses on the pilots had a set up top, so they could MU with the 4000 class. When I rode the Upper Hudson, behind one of the 5000 class RS36 units, the piping was still there, but capped.

Notice the two hoses on the right side of the locomotive. Not being a D&H modeler I had to go by what was in the photos that I had. Bob

I stand corrected. Who knows when this mod was done. I have been around the G&J 4116, and the two at Colonie, and they only had the high hoses. Of course I'd open my big mouth and get proven wrong! It's still a nice model.

It's still a nice model. I wasn't out to prove anyone wrong, I just wanted to show that I had detailed the 4103 as it was in the photograph. I found out a long time ago that you really need good photos of all angles to be able to model any unit correctly.......especially if it's a model from a railroad you don't normally model. BTW: if this was the biggest mistake you made today you fared better than a lot of folks in this country did. Bob

Hotshot, I didn't at all feel you were there to prove me wrong, and I didn't intend to pick apart your model.
I had a good friend and colleague who was a manager in the D&H mechanical dept. unfortunately he died in 2014. He could have given the detail of this mod. It must have been done near the end, so it could run with newer power. I do know that the DL converted their ex D&H RS3s, but they may have also converted from a #6, to 26 brake system.
In the end, I learned something I didn't know happened.

Very awesome model, I only hope that when I finally get around to actually starting detailing the models I have been collecting they are half as good as yours. Well done.
