Last weekend I finally completed an IAIS SD38-2 for a good friend. 157 started life as a undecorated Kato unit...
Cab, cab interior, short hood, sub base, steps, chain tensioner, air filter box, fans and radiator screens were all replaced with Cannon parts.
Details West and Detail Associates helped with improvements to the pilot details, horn, grabs and lift rings. New walkway extensions were fabricated from safety tread stock.
The fuel tank received some attention thanks to a Hi-Tech Details waste fluid retention tank and some piping from my spare parts bin.
Under the cab I went with scale chain from Athabasca Scale Models on the brake chain tensioner and rivet decals from Archer on the brake cylinder mounting plates.
Custom spark arrestors adorn the dynamic brake hatch and were created from bits of styrene and Scale Scenics micro mesh.
A coat of Scalecoat II MOW Gray primed all surfaces/materials for their final paint colors.
With the cab interior masked off, both ends then received Scalecoat II C&NW Yellow. Once dry, the yellow ends were carefully masked in preparation for the Scalecoat II Loco Black.
After decals, clear coat and final assembly here is how she looks today...
A TCS WOWSound decoder, sugar cube speaker, LEDs and Sergent couplers round out the build on this pretty lady. Here she idles away the afternoon at Mack Yard on the Knuckleheads Free-mo layout.
At Dead Man's Curve, also found on the Knuckleheads Free-mo layout, she and IAIS ES44AC 500 have their train moving at track speed as they enter the curve's superelevation.
