Oh boy, pressure to finish Honestly modeling generally takes a back seat for me in the summer. I'm starting to get geared up again though. This is one of my projects to finish this fall/winter though (along with the cullet hoppers which just need final paint/decals). Yours turned out really nice Sean!

I know, excuses are like.......well......we wont go there. This is a family group. Finished my freight car project this afternoon so now this is going to be my main focus for a while. When I last left this the Canon cab was mostly built up but needs to be attached to he shell. I also need to decide how far to take the pilots. The Athearn ones are pretty crude by todays standards. I really dont this there is to much left before they can get a coat of primer. My biggest worry on these is how bad the old drives are, I havent tested them at all since I got them. I think at a minimum new wheels are in order. Im hoping Santa brings me a NCE Power cab this year so I can actually use some of this stuff.

Now that the weather has turned in the Midwest and all of the Christmas stuff is up I had some time over the past few weeks to finally start working on this one again. Finishing the Milwaukee cullet hoppers (in the freight forum) helped as well.
I managed to get these ready to the point of getting the first coat of primer on and seeing how everything looks (blobs, bad sanding jobs, and every other little mistake show up so much better in gray primer).
There really wasn't that much left once I started digging into it again. Both units got some pilot detailing (coupler lift bars and grab irons, there wasn't much on the prototype). The MU connections between the two units will be added after painting to keep them from breaking off now. The Athearn mounting nubs for the handrails were shaved off so I can install a set of Kato handrails I picked up.
The Cannon cab was completed and attached as well. I decided not to detail out the interior so I left the floor out. Added details include: all weather windows on both sides, antenna, new headlight, and a custom bracket to hold the horn. Here's the custom bracket made from styrene
Here's some shots of the progress. Hopefully sometime in the next week or two I can get the primer on them.

I really like the idea of the radiator fan. Makes it one of a kind and I am surprised not having seen some from Athearn or other companies doing so. Looking great!

Lookin' good Mike! Glad you're going with the Kato railings. It shocks me why Athearn never drilled for 3 stanchions on the end instead of 2. 99% of all the non-MU SWs built had the 3 stanchions, what was Athearn thinking on this??

Yeah I don't know why they did that either Sean. The Kato ones seem to be an almost perfect fit except for the calf unit, the back walkway is wider than the standard unit (now that it has been modified from what Athearn created) with the stairs to I'll have to cut out the center section to stretch them out a little and put a piece of wire back in for the rail. Shouldn't be too hard though. The units hit the paint booth on Tuesday for a coat of primer and today they got a couple coats of Milwaukee orange. I'm planning on giving the orange a few days to dry real good before I mask for the black though. I'm hoping Maybe Saturday or Sunday to spray the black on them. Here's a few quick update shots though, first getting ready for primer (along with an SD7 that I'll update in another thread) and the second is drying after the orange coat. I used Polyscale Milwaukee Road orange (my last bottle). I think it gives a good representation of new-ish paint that hasn't faded so much. Even though these will be weathered somewhat severely the paint wasn't that old in the 60's due to the Milwaukee changing paint schemes. By the next update these should really look like Milwaukee units

Cause I know everyone is anxiously awaiting an update. Sprayed the black on new years eve with a little touch-up this morning. Turned out really good, though I did end up having to get out a new tip for the airbrush. Next is a quick shot of gloss coat this afternoon for the decals. I left the roof off of the cab so I could get the window glazing back in after the dull coat. I'm hoping to get the decals on maybe tomorrow nite. Should be doable considering the decals pretty much consist of numbers and the herald under the cab window. Then its just some minor assembly and paint detailing (step edges and the spark arrestors need to become more silver than black) and they're ready for decoders.

So...... I've got them mostly decaled and just waiting those last touches like painting the white on the pilot grabs, adding the airline hoses, and of course putting them back on the frames. Decaling always seems to take me longer than I think it will. Like I said got them mostly finished and realized I'm missing a few key decals. Both units are number 691, the cab unit gets a small A next to the number on the hood and the other gets a small B. Of course what can't I find......my sheet of white railroad roman letters! I found two sheets of black ones and numerous sheets of block white letters of course! Drives me crazy. Anyone have spare 'A' and 'B' decals they want to part with? LOL I need 2 medium size A's and B's and 2 small A's LOL. Guess I need to buy another sheet of decals (which will just ensure that I find mine once I place an order). The A unit also had white 'X's on the frame during the 60's which I need to get as well, though I did find a source for those. Too bad they dont include the A and B's I need. Getting closer, but once again waiting for a delivery of parts. Maybe I'll finish those last details while I wait for the decals to arrive. Should be done soon.

Ugh, had a whole post typed up and it crashed! Finally finished the build! Got the last of the details finished today and took some better pictures. The window glazing was kind of a pain to install but taking it slow they all went in very well, I even cut out some glazing for the Detail Associates all weather windows. Turned out really good. The roof of the cab didnt fit very well for some reason, had to glue it in one side at a time and clamped it to keep everything aligned. It mostly stayed in place. The last items to work on are mechanical. The chassis needs to be torn apart, gears and towers cleaned up, and everything hard wired together. Each unit needs lights installed and of course decoders. This is all going to take a back seat though since there is no real rush to get them running since there is no Beer Line layout yet. Here's some detailed pictures of each unit. 691A: One unique thing about this pair is the side sills. For some reason the Milwaukee stenciled the 'X' on the sides of the A unit only, along with the unit number up by the front steps. Not sure why the B unit never got these but all the photos of the pair I can find show them like this. Just makes them more unique I guess. Here's 691B: I think we need some orange and black for the site banner now Hopefully the next build doesnt take this long!

They look great! I've always thought the beer line would be a great layout. I've seem to be doing a lot of looking around and researching it.
