I don't typically model GE power, but I got a good deal on this undecorated Atlas C30-7 a few years ago. It's not up to RPM standards, but hey, it looks like something you'd find on the railroad anyway! There has been some debate over the gray...some say it's too light, others say it's accurate. I really don't care either way...unless it's right next to the prototype for comparison. She's got Tsunami (dual speakers) and full LED lighting effects installed as well. I would post a video, but that was filmed before I slowed down the Gyralight to a more prototypical 55-65 "sweeps" per minute. And one final "in progress" shot. I added the extra grills after it was pointed out that the 2nd half of the order had them. Could I have just chosen a different road number? Yes...but what fun would that have been.

.... I don't think I'll EVER be up to RPM standards, and I'm fine with that!! I appreciate their fine work, and strive to get close. With that, that looks GREAT! You got the body parts right, and the lighting and details well executed. Fine work! ~ Carmine

Dave, that is a very nice looking model and the weathering is very believable.

Fantastic weathering sir Does this unit have dcc/sound under the hood? Thanks! And yes, 7043 is fully equipped with Tsunami sound (dual speakers) and front/rear LED lighting.

Would you happen to have a picture of under the hood? I have a few C30-7's that I would like to bring into the present century.

I don't, but if I had to do it again I'd use a Loksound Select board. Installation of the Tsunami AT-1000 and the Select Direct boards is similar, as they both have solder pads that you can run all of your wiring to.
And now that you mention it, I can't remember which style Tsunami decoder I installed!
As long as the current draw of your motor is reasonable, you can use that as a guideline as to what decoder you can use. If it's too high (greater than 1 amp), you might want to consider repowering the locomotive. Decoders can deal with a certain level of motor issues, but a smooth running DC locomotive makes the best candidate for conversion to DCC, naturally.
Other than that, lighting outputs are another factor...something with a full lighting package and ditch lights would need more than just the 4 of a Tsunami decoder.
PM me if you'be got any other questions. I'm no expert by any means, but I've done enough installs to probably help you out...including prototypical programming and operation.

I would probably go with Loksound as well. I find it far superior to Tsunami in my C430's vs my tsunami equipped C630's. I'll hit up up when I make it to the sound stage in the build.

The only thing about Loksound is that you basically need their Lokprogrammer to do anything efficiently.
I'm really glad I invested in one...it made a night and day difference with programming, and I don't have to worry about anyone shipping me a board with the wrong sound files!

I know it's an old post do you remember what you used for the extra grills at the hood step out.

Brass strips...it's all I had laying around and I didn't want to run to the hobby shop or order anything.

Hi Tech Details makes plastic versions of Dave's scratchbuilt grills. I've used them on some BN C30-7's along with some of there other parts.
