Well everyone, the workbench is set up again. I've been gone for a couple years due to buying a home, moving, renovating and settling in (and probably a bit of a lower interest in the hobby). Now that the weather's turning cooler, I figured my skills needed a little sharpening too. So, I unpacked 6 undec Atlas units and took some suggestions for what to do with them. Here's the progress on a rather obscure (to me, anyway) piece of motive power: Gateway Western 3020, complete with a special Operation Lifesaver paint scheme. I didn't create this thread in the FINISHED section because I still need to add an NCE decoder for all of the lighting features, and shave off those horrible "sanding lines" from the brake rigging. I didn't think they'd be as noticeable as they are...thanks, ATLAS. The nose came from the future Conrail 3276 (GP40-2) Front end details applied for illustrative purposes Rear-end details Body colors applied and touch-up complete. The last few photos are of a cosmetically finished state, and there's no weathering applied for a freshly-painted appearance like some of the photos I used as reference. Modeled as early to mid-90s if I remember correctly. Those are MV lenses for all of the head/rear lights and ditch lights, but they'll be replaced since I decided to actually go ahead and install DCC. I'm using NCE because (as far as I know), the Tsunami boards for Atlas units only have 2 extra lighting functions and I need six...a small sacrifice but that's the way life is. All lighting will be done with LEDs as well.

That turned out great! TCS makes not so expensive 6 function decoders... Just FYI.

What yellow did you use for the sill and pilots.
Those silver trucks set it off nicely.
Just like the looks of this ex wp workhorse

Update:
I installed the NCE decoder (DASR-type) and wired up all of the LEDs, and I guess I didn't remember they had 5 function outputs and not six like I thought. I was going to sacrifice the rear ditch lights, but then I found that ESU makes a drop-in 645 board with six outputs. Might have to give that one a try.
Up until now I've strictly been a Soundtraxx guy, so hopefully they're as easy to work with as the Tsunamis.

I didn't realize that NCE's DASR type only came with 5... That's good to know.

I didn't realize that NCE's DASR type only came with 5... That's good to know. Yep...I guess after 2+ years of being away my memory failed me. On the plus side, the Loksound decoders are slightly cheaper than the Tsunami boards (at least on Tony's Train Exchange). I had a hard time finding what I needed because of all their engine types, but finally found the proper 645E3. Order placed, and a few hours later TTX called and asked if I needed the 16-cyl turbocharged prime mover. I said yes, and they explained that the confusion was due to their website containing some error during the sound selection process (they just had it listed as "645E3" without non-turbo, 12 cyl, etc). Excellent customer service on their part, and I knew I should have called to verify too! Results forthcoming... Dave

Dave, I thought that 38-2s used 16-645 NON Turbo?? (Hence the twin stack "Roots Blown" type exhaust)

You're absolutely right, but 3020 is a GP40.
