I'm looking to do possibly 2 Helm gp38-2s. I'm putting together a list of parts and was wondering if the unit on top of the cab was an air conditioning unit. Does anyone know what part to use for it, I was thinking the "vapor" style made but details west would be correct. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1701576

I got some parts in the mail, still waiting on a few other details but I was able to get a start on this project. I'm also thinking of trying out Pacific Westerns magnetic brake hoses and MU hose details.

Thanks Vince. I was going to start painting today but I decided to try a Cannon cab and interior, also I noticed this Helm unit has an extended dynamic brake hatch and the P2K model I have doesn't have that. Is that something that would have to be scratch built or is there a kit that can be purchased?

You can make it from an Athearn or Atlas dynamic brake housing. P2K makes one themselves as you can buy the proto 38-2's with the extended range dynamics.

I noticed the Atlas version is longer but wasn't positive it would be interchangeable on a P2K model. I also noticed the correct housing on a P2K family lines gp38-2 but wasn't sure if it can be sold separately or who to even contact to ask, Walthers??

I ordered an Atlas dynamic brake and Cannon dynamic brake doors 1806, hopefully it works out.

The Cannon doors are for standard 38/39/40 series dynamics. You need -2 doors which I think somebody makes or they can be taken from an Athearn or Atlas -2 dynamics that has them. The standard extended range doors close flat and flush with the dynamic blister where as the -2 sit outward on the blister like in your pics. Which Atlas dynamic did you order?

To get a better idea of what I'm talking about, look at the extended range dynamic door on the SD40X at the bottom of my sig. You'll see that the door is flush. That is the early type and what Cannon sells. When you look at -2 dynamics the extended range doors protrude outwards and sit a lil different. I would get either an Athearn or Kato SD40-2 dynamic housing as they have their doors directly parallel to each other. You can cut that section out and slice it into your 38-2 housing. Either that or cut the ext. range doors off of any 2 Athearn or Atlas GP40-2 dynamic housings, make the extension to the 38-2 housing and put the doors on. You might have to experiment to see what's right for you.

If you happen to have an old GSB SD40-2 kit kicking around there are a pair of applique access doors that could be used. I know its a long shot... Here's a scratchbuilt example

I don't have any spare parts. I think I'm going to buy a P2K 38-2 with the correct part. Maybe use the engine for a future project.

But building that ext. range part yourself is half of the fun. kit bashing projects weather it's large or small put that extra personal touch to your model lol.

You are right Mark it is half the fun but I don't know the correct parts needed to kitbash it. There's still plenty of detail parts and painting to keep me busy.

I bought a P2K Clitchfield 38-2 with the correct DB hatch. I'll swap the hatches and the Clitchfield unit will get a paint job to a CSX yn3 scheme, but that's later down the road. I put together a Cannon cab kit and it doesn't come close to fitting. I might try to make some modifications to the hood and nose in order for the cab to fit but not sure how I feel about that yet.

Hey Bob, it looks like that HLCX unit might have been ex L&N. Notice it has a blocked out nose light. The indentation is still there.

I did notice the former headlight in the nose, I haven't decided whether or not its a detail I really need to include, its more of an uncertainty of being able to make a clean cut in the nose.

Do you know if a p2k SD45 nose goes on the same as their 38-3's do? I've probably got a few extra of the p2k SD45 noses with the headlight in them. All you'd have to do is plate it over.

I've actually been searching for a proto 38-2 with a nose light and doing what you said. Seems like the Seaboard models have them in the nose and the cab which is a plus. I'm not sure if an sd45 nose would be a match but I'm also thinking that if I went that route I'd have to fit the sd45 nose with a brake lever which sort of defeats the purpose of avoiding cutting the nose.
