Has anyone painted a locomotive in GWI orange for any of the Genesee & Wyoming family of railroads? Looking for a suggestion for the color of orange. I mainly work with floquil and lacquer paints.
Thanks Dave Greenberg

TruColor paint carries the Genesee and Wyoming orange, number 115. TruColor is acetone based. If you are accustomed to solvent based paints, you will love this stuff !

Mark,
Thanks for the reply. Its odd you say this because they are 2 entirely different kinds of paint.

also, can anyone help with coloring a alternate paint scheme for my RR? It is the orange GWI scheme for a non dynamic SD40-2.

Mark, Thanks for the reply. Its odd you say this because they are 2 entirely different kinds of paint. Dave I hate water based paints - always have .... although I HAVE tried them. With the disappearance of Floquil and the difficulty of trying to get any solvent based paints shipped to Canada, TruColor was my saving grace when they came on the scene. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of the stuff, it's a great paint to work with. I have over 150 bottles of their paint in my stock and won't use anything but now. I can easily paint and mask three colors in a single day ! Could never do that with other brands. Has sure picked up the pace when a project needs to get done. The paint covers better than anything else I've tried. So, combine the fact you need less paint coverage and the acetone evaporates very quickly, it's dry enough in a couple hours for masking. Yes, it IS a different kind of paint, but acetone is still in the solvent based family, unlike water based finished. Mark.

I DEFINITELY second THIS!! Tru-Color paints are great to work with. The pigments are fine enough to cover completely, without obscuring fine details... Even colors like orange, yellow and white cover well, without the IRRITATING "puddling" that most water based acrylics often do! My freelance Railroad uses C&EI Orange, and I get beautiful coverage - easily. The Acetone thinner they sell, is EXPENSIVE. I go to my local Automotive Speed Shop, and buy a QUART of Moroso brand Acetone, for only $14.00!! (OR - 32 ounces, for the cost of FOUR ounces at the hobby shop!) You want a decent primer. (DON'T spray directly onto plastic, unless wet sanded. It about WILL chip and peel...) You will be happy with the results. It dries QUICKLY. It dries to a smooth, flat surface, great for decals. Like Mark said, you can mask over it within an hour. Maybe sooner, but I'm playing it safe. TruColor paint carries the Genesee and Wyoming orange, number 115. TruColor is acetone based. If you are accustomed to solvent based paints, you will love this stuff ! Mark.
