While poking around on the Diesel Detailer forum yesterday, I came across a link to a company that makes a kit for an MLW S13 to fit either onto a Bachmann S4 or Athearn SW1000/1500 chassis. Here's a link to the site: pmimodels.netfirms.com While looking at this model, I got thinking about the possibility of converting it into an Alco S6. I looked up the prototype dimensions of both units and the differences are tolerable (inches in difference for most with largest being only one foot). Some of the dimensional differences may have to do with the frame used, but I'm not fully sure about that. Now for the most important part. I've been trying to observe the visual differences between the two models to see what conversions would be needed. An obvious difference I've noticed is that the walkway lowers slightly creating a step near the front pilot of the carbody. Another difference I've noticed is the number and placement of carbody filters. The S6 looks like it has three filters on one side and possibly five on the other. For the S13, it has four filters on one side and six on the other with four of them being grouped in a square shape. If anyone else knows any differences please feel free to reply to this post Blane

Hey there-I tossed around this idea a while ago too.I was just going to use the Atlas S1/2/3/4 body. It's the same length(I believe)and the cab is correct. The S13 is more flattened at the cab roof.Keep me posted. Anthony

Yes I believe they're the same length but the S13 has the closest carbody in comparison to the S6. After 1955 all Alco switchers had welded carbodies plus no more little vents on all doors and just larger square vents instead. I should check the cab which probably can be reused from Atlas. Luckily the S13 is a kit so any necessary could be done before assembly.

Biggest thing to using ALCO S-1 thru S-4 shells is those radiator grills are on the sides while the S-5 thru S-9 are on the front of the long hood. Too bad there isn't someone like Cannon that does ALCO locos like they do for EMD locos.
