Here’s a pretty simple build I recently completed - 3 of the Kato SD40-2 “Mid” units that have been painted to fit into my 1995 era ATSF roster. The only real major changes to these was cutting out off of the molded on fans and switching over to Cannon fans and the addition of Cannon see through exhaust stacks on 2 of the 3. On the 5142, the dynamic brake housing was swapped out for a later model extended range housing, Q fans were added and a toilet hatch was added to the top of the nose. Other than that, a very straight forward build that added 3 more extremely nice running locomotives to my roster. These will be able to run on anything from locals and road switchers to hotshot intermodal trains – just like they were really assigned back in 1995. Before: After: Weathered and done: Roster shots: A few more pics can be found here: www.pbase.com/sammy1974/sd402s.

Sammy~
Your builds are always top notch, seeing these units makes me wish the ATSF was still around.

See the MU cables but don't see any brake pipe hoses?

Nice build. I especially like the weathering on the trucks. Looks just like the occasional ATSF SD40-2 that would wander into the area of San-Antonio where I used to live (near Randolph AFB)
Just curious since I'm coming pretty close to completing my, when did ATSF stop having rear numberboards? I'm modeling 1981, and figure I could use an ATSF SD40-2 as a run-through on a coal train or interchange.

Sammy~
I was just wondering if you happen to have any F45s in your collection? I would love see them if you do.

What is your method for masking off the unit? Do you have a template of the curves?

What technique did you employ to remove the original Kato fans?

Thanks guys for all of the nice words. Shame on me for not checking back as often as I should.
Spike, I've got a template that I tape behind a piece of glass to make my bonnet curves. I've done so many of these over the years, I can almost do them without the template. Almost!
Cajon, I use various drill bits and finish with a grinding stone in a dremel tool. Slow and easy.
