That's a great-looking flat car. There's definitely a shortage of later flat cars. The Intermountain and P2K 52' 6" models are great, but the ones that lasted into my 1998 modeling era were pretty much only in MOW service. A lot of prototypes were unique to their particular railroad also, it seems. If you can make this one available with the deck, I'll have to add one to the collection. Thanks for sharing your progress!

The body looks good. I may have to try to get one or two from Shapeways. ONE millimeter means NOTHING to me... But I'm a half blind, arthritic, diabetic!! I would love to try one, if nothing else, have something different. I have a "proto freelance" Railroad, that follows MY standards... Gives me a degree of "flexibility"!! I can't afford the PAINT for it yet - but I look forward to being able to tackle one of those, when I'm able!

Adam.... You have a direct link to the Shapeways store??
I wasn't kidding, this looks like an outstanding way to have some conversation starting equipment on my Pacific Belt RR!! I'd love to check it out.

Thanks guys! Shapeways printed the car again and it's on its way now. Hopefully this time it will work out the way it was meant to. It should build into a really nice model. Quick picture of the PRR flat with completed lettering: Should be a quick project to finish from here.

Carmine, It's not for sale yet from Shapeways, but it will be soon. I have a half dozen or so small improvements to make to the file, and then I'll do a test print of that version. If all goes well, it will be up for sale shortly after and I'll post the link here. I'll also write up a short instruction sheet/parts list to help others build them.
The reason the 1mm difference matters is that it throws off the spacing of the stake pockets from one end to the other. By the time you line up one end, the other end is shifted by an entire board. That, and they ought to be able to deliver a product that's within the tolerances they give.

I was being slightly LOL!..... I know that 1mm can make a significant difference in 1/87 scale. I don't usually sweat the tiny details (I don't CARE how many door louvers a GP7 had in 1953, compared to 1956). But I do appreciate, that those details are a hobby within the hobby! I appreciate very nicely done, PLAUSIBLE models, that fit my time frame (1977-78), and my freelance Railroad's region (PNW). Therefore, I have saved significant $$$, buying beta versions on Shapeways.... It gives me a satisfying part (for me), and puts a few bucks in the designer's coffers, for more design development! Win-Win?? I think so anyway! Carmine Pacific Belt RR

No new pics to show of the projects I'd been posting before, although it isn't true that there has been no progress made there. Just not enough to take a picture of. But, to put a little life in this thread, here is a Branchline boxcar kit that I am rebuilding into a different PRR prototype car. Work so far includes new sills and roof, and once those are painted the kit will basically go together as designed. It'll stay in a very rusty circle keystone.

That looks GREAT! Is that a 40 footer? I'm looking for short boxcars, WITHOUT roofwalks, to fit in my World... Even if only an East coast prototype... THAT'S my advantage of a Freelance Railroad! ~ Carmine

...... Do you have anything available on your Shapeways store yet? Can we have a link? I'm just anxious to create some 70's rolling stock.

It's a 40 footer but it does have a roofwalk. Interesting prototype though.
As far as the Shapeways store, I don't have anything up yet in regards to freight cars, just some miscellaneous things I've done for a couple friends. Once I get some free lunch breaks at work I'll get the flatcar ready to print again.

Since I've got a week of school left, I figured I should finally take advantage of the fancy printers the art majors have here and make use of the decal artwork I've been hoarding. I'm sure you'll see a few of the projects covered on these sheets take shape before too long. The two on the left are a lifetime supply of covered hopper decals for my Coal River. Top right is a bunch of prototype cars, either things I just couldn't find decals for or some kitbashes I have planned. Middle right is some freelanced cars, mainly a SECX/O&W style unit train. Bottom right is logos for the unit train as well as a few miscellaneous logos that I'll combine with commercial decals for some unique prototype cars. There are also a few for a flatcar load I'd like to try scratchbuilding in the near future.

Thanks Nick! It has me wondering if it's worth doing on some of the other cars I'm working on too.

They had such a massive car fleet they made it everywhere in the country. Im sure Ill have one appear now and then on my Milwaukee Beer Line.

Small update- some paint on the PRR boxcar. Paint match isn't great, but it's going to be pretty heavily weathered, so it should be fine. I didn't waste much time on the paint color because of that. It does look better in person than it does in the picture.
