These have been finished for a few months now, but here's the story of how they came about. After not building anything worthwhile for a long time, last year I gathered all the parts needed to build an ABBA set of ATSF GP60's. After building 4 GP60M's this way over the last several years, I decided to go ahead and add some more to my roster since I really wanted to try and build some GP60B’s that would run well with my 60M’s. These are all built from the P2K GP60. Simple build, cut off the cab and sub bases. A few other small bits (like relocation of the brake levers on the 60M’s) and add the new items needed for the conversions and we’re off and running. The additions are old Railpower items, such as the new cabs and the new front clips for the GP60B's. Of course, just a few weeks after I acquired all the parts I needed for the builds, Fox River Valley announced they were coming out with these (at some point). Undeterred by the news, I pressed on with my project. After all, I'd done things the hard way for years, so why stop now? Besides, I got the P2K's for dirt cheap anyway. Onward! Here are a few pics that show the before, during and after: A few closer shots of the B units. These have Smokey Valley stations and hand bent hand rails. And, here’s the group, running together – as God intended in true Santa Fe fashion.

Awesome work as always Sammy. You make your conversations look so easy. And your right, that is the way they are suppose to be run.

Super tight set of units there Sammy! You did wonderful work on these and they look great. I've always liked these ABBA sets and hope to have a set one day. You should post a few more pics of them running together!

Wow those look good! I will never forget the first time I saw the GP60M's & B's together in Cajon Pass. They were stunningly beautiful when they were sparkling new. Makes me really miss the Santa Fe. Thankfully we have excellent modelers like you Sammy, to keep on representing them.

Thank you guys for the nice words! In a world where RTR is becoming more and more common, it was nice to get all the tools out and build something for a change. I’m planning on doing the same soon with another multiple unit build. These will be easier, though. I’ve got all of the parts so all I need to do is get started on them.

Guys, Sammy takes fine pictures and these units look good. They are much nicer in person and most excellent to run. I got to see them at an Ops session in late March. I've said the same thing on this forum about building instead of RTR as Sammy. The only difference is, he finishes his...... Mikie

Awesome custom work!
I am currently working on a ABA set however my path is a little different. I was lucky to have purchase the Athearn RTR (ABA) shells which I position on the P2K chassis.
Have you ever done a custom model of the Phase I ATSF GP60s? That's next on my list and I need to figure out where to start, the most noticeable difference, according to my untrained eye, is the dynamic brake area.
Cheers!
