Google is not being my friend this morning. I was wondering if anyone can point me to side-on view of a set of F-units?
What I'm curious about is the appearance of the passageway between freight service units - is there an open air gap, or a passenger train-like diaphragm?
Thanks.

AJ, I'll look up my F3 manual and see if I can answer this for you tonight.

Looks like the drawing shows the diaphragms protrude 16" from each end for a total space of 32" between units.

According to the EMD F3 Manual, measured from the end of the car body to the end of the diaphragm is 18-3/8" on both A units and B units, either with couplers or with the permanent drawbar between A and B units. There is no open gap between units that are permanently coupled. I would say the same for units equipped with standard couplers.

Oh yeah, I missed the 1 in front of the 6 that I mistook for an 8 while I was squinting at the drawings the other night. I guess I really should put on my glasses. Is this making post making me sound old ?

The need for glasses comes fast upon us, I have found. A year or so ago, I only needed "reading" glasses while working on N-scale models, but by the end of 2014 I had my first prescription pair of reading glasses because I couldn't read a magazine without squinting. I will say that although they are a mild prescription, the difference is tremendous. And, for the record, I'm only a young 43..... I just feel like a 110 most days. ~_~

Know what you mean, AJ. I've stepped up to tri-focals so I can see my spreadsheets in 3D....

The doc said that I probably needed them when I was in grade school, that might explain why I did so poorly in school. My prescription has gotten steadily worse over the past 18 years, I used to only need my glasses for seeing objects far away, or nearsightedness. Now I need my glasses to see things that are close too.
