Have you ever had any luck with casting gear towers? Chris Mears is going to resin cast some Flexicoil A-1-A sideframes, but we were wondering if it would be possible to cast the entire gear tower as well and then the user could supply the individual gears.
A truck tower would be 3D printed and then a resin cast made from that printing.

In talking with Mike Bartel at IHP, you'll probably do better 3D printing the gear tower. He's had great luck 3D printing truck sideframes in nylon. I would think that would be more durable than resin. You might have to play with part orientation a bit, but try assembling the first one before going to the effort to cast it.

By the time somebody 3D printed the tower and bought the gears it would be cheaper just to buy the tower directly from Kato at $46 per pair. I'm after a cheap alternative. I suppose you could print it in a lesser grade material so long as the print lines don't interfere with the mechanism inside.

Success! Rabbits have new shoes! I picked up all the sideframe sets today at the Woodstock show from my resin caster Barry of RailRec. These are off to the scrapper! The good news is that the Athearn sideframes do a better job of hiding the moondisc Roco wheels! LMK if you'd like a set of these new sideframes that fit Atlas(Roco) and Concor units. I can't sell them, but we can trade. They come with brake cyls and swing hangers, although they are quite brittle and you're probably better off using Athearn or P2K hangers.

Those look like a HUGE improvement!
If I HAD anything worth trading....
Too bad I don't know him well enough to have him mold me some single clasp Flexicoil trucks, for my Atlas/Roco SD35s.

Well I do have this badboy that could be a recipient but I have just the one. I never thought that the Roco SD trucks looked all that bad, But I digress that I model CN and CP predominately and neither had they rostered any SD7s, 9s, 24s, or 35s...I wish they did! Can you imagine SD9rms!

Voila! All detail parts applied and painted. I just need to weather the chassis and she's all done! The resin cast swing hangers are more robust than I thought, but the air brake cylinders kept snapping so I pilfered some from early ugly P2K sideframes. Here's another rescue. Found this Revell G31 gon at a swap meet recently for $4. It was already painted black and the PO lowered the bolsters to the proper ride height, added Kadee #5s, wire grabs and stirrups. I rummaged through my decal box and found some AC CDS dry transfers. I know Chris V would look down his nose at this one because the AC had no G31s, but M'eh...tis what it tis. I already built one of these in DT&I and didn't want another one or a Wabash, so there was no 'accurate' G31 scheme in black left to do.

Fun stuff. Every update, I'm hoping to see a new rabbit added to the collection, but even the progress updates are fun.

Stan Rydarowzky (sp) has a set of decals foe AA / WAB hoppers that I have used to reletter a Tangent G31 with the larger font. But this looks great in AC paint. Who makes the decals? Brian

That gon is really interesting. Don't know how many times I've passed those over, but yours looks nice. Seems like every show I go to there's a new "junk" car I'm looking for because of that sort of rebuild.

Decals on. I still need to add the roof details, and brass stirrups and blow in the black paint and drybrush on the silver grilles.
