The GE U30C was one of the earliest successes from General Electric in the diesel market. With 600 units sold, the U30C proved to be a viable alternative for customers who were unable to purchase SD40s or SD40-2s from Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD).
Here is a breakdown of the different phases.
phase Ia: Externally identical to the phase II U28C. a: Radiators slightly wider than the hood. b: Raised section of roof centered between the radiator halves . c: Radiator intakes same width as the radiator itself. d: Built-up pilot face. e: Half length handrail notch. f: Rectangular headlight casing. g: Circular door latches - two per door. h: Eight equipment doors on left side below cab. i: Double step on left side frame sill.
Built Dates: Nov.1966 - Jan.1967 Number Built: 9 (ACL #3021-3024) (PRR #6535-6539)
phase Ib: Radiator intake screens become shorter than the radiator, with two smaller intakes ahead of the main one.
Built Dates: Feb. - July 1967 Number Built: 15 (D&H #701-706) (C&O #3300-3303) (RDG #6300-6304)

Phase II: a: Entire hood below radiator is the same width as the radiator itself. b: Radiator intakes are redesigned - flat screen flush with the car-body. c: Raised walkway section of the radiator disappears with the raising up of the radiators themselves. d: Rear of the long hood is increased in both height and width to match revised radiator section. e: Addition of air-filter screen ahead of the radiator intake screen. High mounted for oil-bath filter and low mounted for paper air filters. f: Small taper (flaring) ahead of the radiator.
Built Dates: Dec.1967 - July 1968 Number Built: 82 (D&H #707-712) (SOU #3100-3104)* (C&NW #930-936) (Kaiser Steel)** (MP #960-965) (SP #7900-7929)*** (SOO #800-809) (C&O #3304-3312) (CB&Q #890-893)****
* Southern units have high hoods. ** Kaiser Steel units have corrugated intake screens. *** Southern Pacific units have an extra screen added to radiator intake, causing them to project out from the car-body. **** CB&Q units have triple-clasp GSC trucks.

Would combining a Proto U30B and Atlas U30C be a good way to get a Reading unit?
