Inspired by Brian Banna's cheap build thread, I've decided to do one of my own. I've developed somewhat of a soft spot for Seaboard and early CSX in the past few years, so I am choosing to build one of their GP38-2s. I chose #2551 because of the M5 horn, more out of necessity than preference (I couldn't locate the otherwise required RS5T.) As you can see, it's really a boring unit detail-wise, but that's not really a problem. I have a RTR GP38-2 in Seaboard paint on the way, as well as the necessary detail parts. Probably the most involved part of the build is going to be moving the light to the nose, so nothing too bad. I plan to put DCC in the unit and then sell it when it's done, but for now it's something fairly simple for me to do while I'm away at school. I'll of course need a little bit of gray paint to touch up the parts I add, so does anyone know of a paint that matches the gray that Athearn uses? Here's a picture of the unit

I'm doing a similar project. I have a Athearn BB Family Lines GP38-2 2621. I wound up stripping the unit since I couldn't find a gray to match the Athearn FL gray. I cut off the Athearn nose and installed a Atlas nose with a low headlight. I still haven't pinpointed which gray to use since I don't have a airbrush. I have some Scalecoat 2 UP Harbor Mist Gray that I might use. I don't know what could be used for SBD gray. Earl...

There was a discussion on here a little while back regarding seaboard grey.

I did a search just now for the paint color thread and found it, thanks. Nice work on your unit so far, Earl. I like the hood bell.

Well most everything is here and I got a quick start on the unit today. Getting the shell off was a major PITA for some reason. It looks like the shell is bowed in a little on the one side. Here's a shot of everything before I started:

About time I have something to show. I have the cab done other than touching up the paint and decaling the new numbers. I did some work on the pilots, notching the corners and de-Athearning the bottoms. You can also see the plate on the back end where the gyra used to be. The holes are drilled for the MU hoses, but they will need to wait until I repaint the pilots.

Today brought lift rings and a front headlight. I'm really itching to see what those MU hoses will do for it...

Looking good so far. May I ask what your method is for making the nose light notch? I assume just a file?

Thanks everybody for the compliments! Correct, I just filed the notch into the nose. I cut into the nose first with a razor saw to make limits for where I wanted to file.

How about a big sloppy progress shot? I found some time to work on the unit, and, not wanting to mix up a whole jar of paint, I just mixed some cheap Walmart acrylics and brushed that on. I also brushed on the Future. Two things about this picture- I realize the number boards are the wrong font, but as a cheap build, I couldn't be bothered to buy a second sheet just for that. Secondly, I painted the horn gray without looking at the prototype, so it will have to get some black yet. Onward!
