Hi
I am trying to make a 'phase IV' F3A in TT scale. TT only has a rather poor resin F unit, the toylike Lionel cast metal version, or a limited run (and incredibly expensive) FP-something from Tillig, the German TT manufacturer, which actually isn't that good, when all's said and done. So, I thought I might make my own shell.
I've done the sides, rear end and a nose that looks 'OK' but as we all know, just 'OK' and really capturing the look of something as iconic as the EMD bulldog nose are not the same thing.
Therefore I wondered if anyone had been down this road? And if so, what tips they might share?

That's my Coastal unit in the pictures in that thread on TTnut. Resin shell, very old 1960s product. It's closest to an FP9, so rather longer than an F3 (and I may end up needing it for an FP7.) Doesn't really look right, and would need a lot of work ... it's hard to glue things to the resin, it's brittle, difficult to shorten etc.
Hence I'd rather have a shot at making my own. Hope someone out there has done it.

Hi Ben,
The Coastal looks okey to me. Sort of a Bull Dog mated with a babyface.
You've got a good head start by being in possession of that unit.
I think that it is a good place to start.
Make a mold of the nose and then several solid castings.
From those castings you can build up or file down until you get it right.
Then make castings of your modified version.
It's a lot of work but in this case you'll have to go by trial and error.
Maybe cast your masters in Hydocal or white metal so that they are easier to work with.
