These units looked like rebuilt F3s with louvered panels through the porthole area and the same roof panels and radiator fans as found on later F-units. Finding shots are nearly impossible to find on the web despite some folks looking for them. I know of no drawings though inquiring at one of the Southern Railway lists at Yahoo ! Groups may turn something up. Here is a link to SOU 6707, an EMD F3A, the rebuilt FTs looked quite similar to this unit (sans the steam generator roof detail)... rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1342835

Thnx Dale Dale, I remember seeing a few in one of the little "Images of Rail" books on the Southern Railway. Seems like it was probably in the one about the Spencer Shops, but I haven't been able to put my hands on one lately. They're usually inexpensive and go for less than $20. I'm also interested in the same photos as my prototype bought one.

How are you planning on building one of these? Will you start with an FT or an F3?

Hi Chris I've already started. You have to start with an ft because of the wheel base, I cut out the center panel with the port holes & I put in a Highliners panel #3,you have to remove a couple of louvers & cut out & reverse part of the panel & then the hard part is a roof panel from .005 styrene 9.5 ft wide & 18.25 ft long ( best I can tell) if you get that centered on the highliner roof you'll emboss all of the rivets on the new panel then you need a slot for highliners high fans also sand of the old fans and rivets from the old panel & you'll have to make 2 square roof panels im guessing same size as Emd panels. You can see those panels in the G&F book with the 801 photo & yes that's also the one I'm doing

I managed to get Jack Parker's model that he started building years ago and never finished. He was a G&F researcher and fan. Someone here on the board finished it for me and It's going on a shelf as soon as I can find a display case. It was built from a Stewart F3 as that was all that was available when he built it. I know it's incorrect, but it's neat to me because of where it came from.
